cheap valentines cards (and other tokens) I thought I'd bump this because some of these ideas are lovely but need a bit of time. I really like the shower with hearts. IP: Logged |

I love the one where you send your valentines to various postmasters (Loveland, CO, Kissimmee, FL, etc) and they stamp it with a poem and send it to your sweetie. Too cute! I'm going to do that and the jar of nice thoughts

Is anyone else working on or have ideas for cheap, thoughtful valentines day presents? I've been racking my brain, and all I can come with is one of those homemade books of romantic sexy coupons. IP: Logged |

kind of silly.....if you want it to be. I made LOVE dice! One di had places of the body, inner thigh, ankles, eyelids. The other has words like; suck, lick, tickle, etc. roll the dice and have fun!!! Very Cheap!!!! One thing I found out from trial and error is that it's best to use a glow in the dark pen. IP: Logged |

I am making a board game for my sweetie (as I have mentioned in another thread). It's really coming along quite well. I came up with and wrote the rules, and took a cheap checkersboard and covered it with pretty paper. Now I just have to add some more decorations, print out the cards, and scrounge up some dice and a timer. IP: Logged |

Okay so I found a website with the CLEAR GIANT GLASS VASE GEMS to be used for the marble magnets. These are what I ended up using for a birthday gift for my mom with pictures of my dad, her, and my sisters and I, they turned out really well. IP: Logged |

quote: Here is the page that describes it: http://www.theromantic.com/stories/valentines/valentines1.htm I did this for my J this year, and he loved it. I think I sent out 6 cards. I'm not sure if they do it all year, or just around Valentine's Day. IP: Logged |

I have not been able to find these anywhere. It irks me when I see links to them. I could always order them online but the shipping would be outrageous. IP: Logged |

A warning on the giant glass gems... The ones Kellybones and I found to use for christmas presents all had a line in them from where the glass pinched off. This resulted in a big ol' line through the middle of the pictures. In the whole bag, I think there were 2 that didn't have an obvious line. IP: Logged |

Okay, one of my bosses' birthday is on Tuesday. And we're throwing a "garden teaparty"-themed lunch and exchanging presents and whatnot. Does anyone have ANY clue of a good boss present that revolves around this theme? IP: Logged |
|
lesliele Housemate |
Oo! Oo! Go to Borders or Barnes & Nobles or any place that has the little boxed "kits." I know they have bonsai kits, and I think herb garden kits, etc. Your boss would have a Bonsai on their desk! How cute! They're like $5 I think. Or, how about a book on desk exercises? They really keep you refreshed. Edited to say the book idea isn't really gardeny, is it? Huh. Try Target... they have really fun fake vases of flowers with "water" in them. SO. COOL. [This message has been edited by lesliele (edited 04-10-2003).] IP: Logged |

There are books on desk exercise?! IP: Logged |

quote: That's ok! I was gonna edit to say it doesn't necessarily have to revolve around the theme, that would be in a perfect world. Hehe. The desk exercising book sounds neat-o (especially since there sort of is a running "SMA-no O" contest going on here)... although I don't want her to think I think she needs to lose so much weight that she should start exercising at her desk too! quote: Ok, guess I could have explained that better... It's an ergonomics thing... you know, just stretching, and eye strain things... etc. I had a little booklet once from a vendor when I worked at a staffing agency... I just figured there had to be a book on it somewhere out there... How about a fung shue book for her desk? "Artfully arranging your pencil cup" or something... IP: Logged |

Good idea! Cheap gift idear: May I reiterate what I posted in another thread about scent simmers...yummy smelling things to simmer on the range and fill your home with holiday scents. Fill little bags with cinnamon sticks, cloves, dried orange peels, etc. and give with instructions to simmer with water. IP: Logged |

quote: Gotta add to this - last year I made these and they were SO cute!!! If you get the ones that are totally clear glass, pull out the little hanger thing and drip a few drops of paint into the ball (just regular craft paint - experiment with colors, but usually just 2 or 3 look best, more can turn brown!). Then put a piece of paper towel over the top and shake it until it's all covered inside. Put it back in the box with the opening side down until it's dry (a few days) then stick the hanger back in. They are marbled and BEAUTIFUL!!! My roommate and I had a glass bowl full of them on the coffee table and I gave them away in sets of 4 for gifts last year - everyone LOVED them!!!

P.S. what marbles are you all talking about?!? These magnets sound like something I would be making with my younger sibs, but I can't picture what you're talking about (can only see the round marbles and really don't think that is what you mean! lol) Do you maybe have a link to see them? (the older posts' links are expired and don't work anymore) IP: Logged |

Well - I finally convinced the family that a low key holiday was in order this year. Mostly because of my dad & my evil sister- both of whom are horrible to shop for. So this year: Evil sister is getting a hand embroidered (by me no less) silk scarf that she'll probably hate. Good sister is getting a clay tile (sadly I didn't make) that has our favorite animal on it and was lovingly handmade by this cool pottery guy I met on holiday this summer. Haven't decided on Mom's gift yet - she mostly likes anything you thought about & didn't spend more than $8 on. Dad is next to impossible though. He doesn't need anything, doesn't want anything, is very opposed to spending money (years ago he issued an edict against buying him birthday cards because they're a waste). So I don't know what to do for him. I've bought him coffees & beers in the past - to have them go mostly unused. He gets WAY too many magazines as it is (and doesn't read half of them). I thought the magnets could be fun - but he really doesn't have any hobbies. So - what should I do? IP: Logged |

Lulu I love your ideas. They all sound great. I have wanted to do the clear balls with the paint and never have I might have to try that this year. Last year I took those clear balls and used etching cream and etched people's first initial on there. Everyone seemed to like it and they looked pretty. I am one of the not very crafty but really want to be people. But I am trying. IP: Logged |

Meggo, what about making a donation in your dad's name? Perhaps to an organization he really beleives in or one with a great social conscience like Heifer International? I love them and they have something for every wallet size. I always donate in my aunt & uncle's name since they have everything and need nothing. IP: Logged |

my dad.. well - he's UBER conservative (GWB is just a little to liberal for him) so I might be really hard pressed to find a charity that he would support & I would be able to give money too without completely feeling dirty about it. I'm going to ask my good sis - maybe she'll have an idea. IP: Logged |

quote: http://megan.scatterbrain.org/notmartha/tomake/marblemagnets.html Here's the link to the tutorial on "not martha". One important note, you really need to use CLEAR florists marbles, not the ones with a little irridesence on them-the shimmery stuff makes it hard to see the picture. IP: Logged |

This is why I love Digs. I'm poorly this Christmas, so I'm looking for ideas on stuff to make for people (beyond my favorite idea: cooking tons of food in freezable containers and giving that away) I'll be making the marbles, a CD wind chime and probably a few other things... IP: Logged |
