That's a great idea. What Twain quote was it?

I don't know what the quote was or where it's from but I know you can find it in the Dec. 2002 issue of Oprah's magazine. (She read it right from the magazine on the show.) I think it has something to do with the article about her Christmas dinner party.

Add blank notecards to my xmas gift-make list. I got a bunch of Asian/Japanese themed stamps, some red and black ink and some blank notecards. These will go to my MIL and my SM.

Well, Digs has made me officially magnet crazy this year. But I have a bunch of questions.
one, for the paper doll magnets: Do you run the sheets of magnets through your printer and than cut them out? Does the magnetic part stick to the inside of your printer?

2: I want to make those little glass magnets. But I can't seem to find big glass or small magnets. This is a problem - I am very angry with the people at michaels rught now
3: FOr the glass magnets where did you find cool images? I keep going through magazines, but I am not finding anything too cool. I like the ones on Not Martha - the little lipstick, martini glass, and roses, ect. Fun girly stuff.

Okay that does it for me. i am going to make some Holiday cards tonight. Fun with glitter!

I'm making the magnets this year and boy, is it exhausting looking for images (but I am psycho and am making many of them). What I've been doing is flipping through magazines with one of the marbles next to me. When I see anything interesting, I hold the marble up to it. Perspective is everything with those little suckers. Also, look for patterns that might look cool-- even a shirt some model is wearing. The coolest girly images I've found, though, have been from the BeneFit catalog. Vintage-y and sweet.

For my MM project last year I did two types: to my family I gave magnets with everyone's head, as babies and adults, pictured. For my best friend, I gave religious icon MMs featuring Virgins of Guadalupe, Jesus Christ, Shiva, Ganesh, etc, with a few Day of The Dead images thrown in for good measure. Both sets were BIG BIG BIG hits with the recipients.

I have also seen MMs with pop culture icons like Elvis, the Who's Maximum R&R logo, scooters...

I recommend, for those of you with printers, collect pics, lay them out in Word and shrink them down to the appropriate size and print out onto glossy or photo paper with water proof ink.

I, too, was having trouble finding pics to use. I decided to go with textures and colors instead. They look great! My favorites (and the easiest to find) are half white/half color. If you look in the women's magazines (like Cosmo or Glamour) I took bits from the top color bars of the pages.

Another idea (if you have Paint Shop Pro) is to use the preset shapes. There are some of campers, skiers, swimmers, etc. so I created them on the computer and printed them out on photo paper. They worked great! A good printer is recommended though so your image is not all pixelly.

Do any of you use Corbis for pictures? You're supposed to purchase the images, and they're watermarked if you click on them, but for the sizes you're looking for, you can just copy the thumbnail picture, paste it a graphics program, crop out the "corbis.com" tag at the bottom, and be on your way. I'd think they're the perfect size for you all, and you can search for anything under the sun.

FYI - this is probably illegal.

If they're selling the magnets, then using the Corbis images might be illegal. But for personal use, this isn't illegal at all, and probably a good way to find pics!

I'm making home-made recipe books for my gals... complete with a 'cocktails' section. You can find any recipe you want on the internet, and if you're graphic-savvy, you can make it look pretty neat, too!

Hmm.. well I made bath salt for the ladies I work with, and put them in little sleighs with candy, but I don't know what to make for the guys. I want to stay relatively cheap (altogether the salt/sleighs/candy cost about $3 each) - but I'm stumped.

I have made magnet sets for everyone this year! SUCH a fantastic idea. I have tried to personalize them to individual interests, so we'll see how they go over. I even made anatomy ones for my fav anatomy prof, out of some Gray's atlas drawings! (I know, I'm a nerd )

I know it's getting a little late for making presents, but for all of my friends, I bought cheap Christmas stockings and drew their name and a Christmas symbol (holly, tree, snowflake, etc.) on them in glittery puffy paint. Then I filled each stocking with candy and dollar store toys. They loved them! The most popular gift was a little toy tank with battery-operated controls.

what size are your marbles that you use? If I buy the small ones used in vases and fish bowls/tanks then I have to get tiny magnets. The size I like are the big flat ones about the size of a half dollar. The thing is, I can't find just clear ones! They have different blues and greens, which actually worked out well for a while because I couldn't find enough images so I made sets with those and they're totally fun. Where did you guys find your marbles?

edited because without the 't my question didn't make sense.

I'm using the tiny little clear ones. I looked for bigger ones, but Michael's has been out of just about everything lately...and then I buy the rolls of magnets, which work well when you cut them down.

AC Moore had them on Saturday when I was there. I bought the roll of magnets, too, and it's not really strong enough to hold anything up on the fridge.

I just wanted to add on that the colored ones that I bought also included clear ones in the bags. I just had to look at practically every set to find ones with more clear glass than colored. Also, I found them in the flower district in downtown LA, though Saturday I came across the same exact bag at Michaels, they were in the mosaic section.

LittleRed, what's the brand name on them? Any info would be very helpful! We don't have AC Moore around here.

i totally used the mix-in-a-pretty-jar-with-a-recipe-card gift idea this christmas for all my friends and it went over really well! i gave muffin mixes good work to who ever came up with that idea!

for my bf, i made a shot glass chess set. i collected different shaped shot glasses from all over the place until i had enough to make a chess set. i gave that to him for christmas and now i'm working on a coffee table with a chess board painted on top. the whole thing was actually super cheap... the glasses were mostly dollar store finds, and the table was found at a garage sale perfect for the boy i *never* know what to buy! (btw, the inspiration came from a Restoration Hardware catalog

We made a drinking checkers game but our rules are: if your opponent jumps you, then YOU have to do the drink (not the other way around as that website says). The plus on this is that we play with half full cups of beer so the losers get drunk much quicker. At the end of the game, the losers have to drink everything that is left on the board....fun time!

I made mine with the small size marbles and magnets. I use them to hold of paper (one on each corner for a large sheet), but yeah, they won't hold up photos. I don't find them useless at all though, seeing as I always have a bazillion pieces of various paper on my fridge.

When I was in college one of the fraternities had a Checkers Tournament like this every year... except that instead of beer we used jello shots...one team got red, the other team got green, etc. That was one of my favourite parties every year
