I was at CB2 last night (offshoot of Crate & Barrel) and they had some wine glass tags that were a simple wire that wrapped around the stem with just a few cool glass beads on them. I thought this might be a good idea to add the the craft fair we hae going here. I will see if I can find something like it online. IP: Logged |

I've made these before! They're very easy. I have a set myself and have made a couple of sets as gifts. People always seem to like them. I am planning to make my brother some for Christmas this year to go along with the wine rack he wanted. Edited to say they also double as napkin rings very well. Darn! I am trying to find examples of this type of charm and I can't...it's like the wire snakes up the stem instead of sitting right at the base. hmmm IP: Logged |

BG made the long coiled ones for me and I love love love them!! Here is a link to intructions for the simpler looking ones: http://megan.scatterbrain.org/notmartha/tomake/winecharms.html IP: Logged |

I've always left mine plain, but painting the back edges all silver or gold would be a nice touch. You can get a little tester pot of paint or a small bottle of crafty acrylic paint for pretty cheap. I am just getting down to figuring out my Christmas gifts for this year. I am going to make ornaments out of felt: stuffed and blanket stiched little mittens, with snowflakes/stars embroidered on them. Cheap! I will probably make more stuff, including a couple of knitted items. I owe my granny a tea cosy. I started making a striped scarf out of different thicknesses of yarns that I've gotten at thrift stores. Usually two skeins (one of each type of wool) is enough for a fairly long 8"-10" wide scarf. Just knit it in garter stitch (knit every row, front or back) with largish needles to produce a slightly lacy look in the thinner wool. Very chic looking, so far, but I don't know if I'll be able to part with it. If you are the kind of gal, like me, who has lots of odd yarns from thrift store scores, you could always create a beginner's knitting kit for a scarf as described above. I just found 4mm bamboo needles at a dollar store, and sometimes needles can be found at thrift shops, too. You could put together some needles, a little card with the instructions, and two skeins of funky yarn (of different textures and thicknesses and colours/colourways) and pack it all into one of those pretty cloth wine bags (or make your own - dead easy). You could print out or create some easy knitting instructions, if you were uncertain that the recipient had the skills. IP: Logged |

blanketbat The beaded letters are a spinoff of Martha's wedding beaded table numbers. Basically, you take floral wire (20 gauge is good), and bead the wire with beads (duh) and then bend the wire, with needle nose pliers, into whatever letter you want! You can use them for ornaments or gift tags or ala Pottery Barn: IP: Logged |

Thanks for the help! Not quite it...but dammit, I am going to find those puppies somewhere for you guys to see. They are groovy. BG, do you have a photo of the ones you made? I'd lurve to see them. IP: Logged |

No, I don't actually. I made some more this weekend for Christmas gifts. I was going to take a photo and include it in the package. So if no one's found a picture by the time I get my film developed I can surely post one. IP: Logged |

20 and 30 bucks for those wine wrap things, man! That's highway robbery! They're certainly very cute, but - d@mn! - make 'em for less than a buck each! IP: Logged |

So So So cool! I am making those TONIGHT. That's the neatest thing I've seen in ages. I have so many friends who are engaged and they're all getting date and inital mobiles for their trees now! Thanks for the link. IP: Logged |

Thank goodness for you guys and all the inspiration! I'm already getting started. Some things I've made so far: Decoupaged tiles with clothespin backs (and a popcicle stick for stabilization) to be used for memos, photos, recipe holder, etc. I made a couple and the high gloss modge podge on the tile makes it look really sharp. Mander fell in love with one I made and so it's already wrapped for her! Album cover purses. I ripped this idea off of a cool site I can't recall now. Just make a box out of the album cover, line and make a handle. voila. The first one done is a Bobby Vinton album and is too cheesy for words. I think I'll further embellish with shrinky dink charms and such. With the albums I'm making clocks (one for dad, good guy gift I figure). I am putting a layer of gesso on the album and then decoupaging on top. The clock mechanism fits through the whole and is so cheap! For one I'm using marbles without the magnets for the numbers. quote: It was probably HotGlueMama's site. I wish we could see pictures of everyone's stuff. Besides the wine stem wraps, the other thing I know I am making for Christmas this year is an ink drawing from a photo of a moose I took in Alaska this summer. That will be for my parents since they really liked the photo. I am also making some watercolor & acrylic bookmarks (like the one I sent you leanne) for friends. IP: Logged |

quote: Those are so cool! I saw them on HotGlueMama's site. So, how did you actually put the purse together? The ones on the website look like they were punched with grommets and laced together, but I was wondering if you did something different. Also, what did you line it with and how did you attach the lining? I'm making all sorts of goodies this year (magnets, bath stuff, etc.) and I think it would be fun to make some album cover bags to put the gifts in. Oh, and I absolutely love the album clock idea, too! [This message has been edited by Pinkegrl (edited 11-12-2002).] IP: Logged |

You're probably right, I love her stuff. I feel bad for the idea theft but just can't afford to get gifts like that for folks. I pretty much copied hers... I glued the bottoms and used eyelets and plastic thread for the sides. I lined with some silky black fabric and folded it over the edge... attached with hot glue. The handle is folded paper covered with the same fabric. I'm making about 4 or 5 of them and plan to use feather boa to trim some. It was a bit tedious to do all the eyelets but overall pretty simple to make. I'm just psyched to be using the whole album and cover. IP: Logged |

I generally don't mind people taking the idea for album cover purses and then doing their own thing with it - especially if it's just for personal use or a gift or something like that. If you sell them, though, or claim credit for the idea, or sell "your" concept to Tommy friggin' Hilfiger and make a bazillion dollars, then I add you to my voodoo doll collection. Hope you don't have any sudden.....BACK PROBLEMS! (sticks in pin, twists it around a bunch) BWAH HA HA!!! IP: Logged |

Idea: I just used some antique buttons for the wine wrap idea...just plopped them on the wire and then twisted the wire willy-nilly around the stem. I wasn't up for making anything really elaborate for my party next weekend in terms of wine tags, but then I remember I had all these random buttons. So...if that sprouts any ideas...go for it. Oh, the 4.99 wire was 70% off, my only cost! Some of the buttons have rhinestones and whatnot, looks pretty festive. IP: Logged |

quote: No fear! I'm long past motivation to sell my stuff. I'm relieved you don't mind the gifting though because it would be bad karma to give along with such a cool thing. The ones I've made have come out SO cool! I did a Loverboy cover with gold velvet inside, black trim and a black boa. It looks so great. I'm just building up to making my own with these swank ladies from the 50's, wheeee! I also made an earring holder from Crafty Chica's page. She uses screen but I got some of that plastic mesh for embroidery because it seemed sturdier. Glued that on a flat frame, painted and decorated. It looks great! I'm going to put hooks along the bottom for necklaces too. I feel like such an elf! I love it! IP: Logged |

I finally found what I'll do as my "assembly-style personalized gift" for my aunts and uncles. I found lots of vintage ads and pictures at this site (From the Library of Congress) and I'll try to find a few images which relates to each person's hobbies or profession. I'll have them printed on photo paper (after a few image improvement... I'm not studying image processing for nothing) and glue them on blank cards. Tada! Homemade customized thank-you cards. Now I just have to find inexpensive blank cards. IP: Logged |

quote: Michael's sells white and cream ones, 20 in a pack, for about 5 bucks for the small size (I think it's A4). I've bought them in bulk like this at JoAnn's, too, but the quality wasn't as good. If you're willing to pay more, Strathmore sells some, as well as some other company that has fancy schmancy ones. You can get them all at the craft store. IP: Logged |

I have finally joined the marble magnet revolution. My magnets are a little big, but hey... I think they're fine. I'm using cutouts from my Texas Travel Guide and it's making me miss Texas soooooooo much. But it makes my fridge happy! IP: Logged |

I am a total craft imbecile - I haven't had any success since making bizarre-looking families of dolls with loo rolls and wool and green felt tip pens as a child, but I am about to embark on a project. My best friend got knocked up and married last year, in very quick succession, and they didn't have time to hire a photographer for the wedding. I took loads and loads of photos, and I have now picked out the 20 best to have enlarged. I bought some books that are made with a very soft handmade paper with petals embedded in it, and a spray can of photo glue to make her a wedding album. Do any of you experts anticipate a problem with the glue working on that type of paper? Should I spray the glue just onto the back of each photo, or give a spritz to the paper as well? IP: Logged |
|
lesliele Housemate |
Sophie!! That is such a great idea! so sweet. as for mounting them, only spray the back of the photo!!! Spray mount is sticky stuff, and it will ruin the paper if you over spray. I always use a newspaper, and after each spray, you throw away one sheet of it. Also, you might want to use photo corner squares. They have clear ones that are very nice for glossy photos. IP: Logged |
|
kena Housesitter |
There are also small double-sided sticky squares that you can use to attach photos in an album. It might be faster and easier to work with than glue. IP: Logged |
|
Sophie Housemate |
thanks, guys - you certainly are the experts. I thought about using photo corners, but the paper is so soft and floppy (it's almost like kitchen roll or really thick loo paper) that I thought the photos would probably pop out every time the page was turned. I probably should have bought books with stiffer paper, in hindsight, but these were just so pretty with the pink petals and everything. What are these sticky squares, though? Are they by 3M? do they enable you to lift the photo off quickly if you position it badly on your first go? IP: Logged |
|
kena Housesitter |
quote: Huh, I can't really tell. I know they're not by 3M. Someone in a craft or photography shop might give you pointers on how to use them. IP: Logged |

Just some regular double sided tape would probably work well. You can find it pretty much anywhere, but I don't know how easy it would be to reposition the photos on such delicate paper. IP: Logged |
|
Pixie Housemate |
Be careful with the different types of adhesives... some aren't photo-friendly and can cause your photos to deteriorate. I LOVE those photo-mounting squares. If you're careful with them, and don't press down on the photo until you're sure of the placement, you can lift them off... however, I've never tried this on really delicate paper, so your mileage may vary. There's also a variety of glue and tape-like items that are repositionable... check out the scrapbooking aisle of your local craft store. IP: Logged |

Here are some of the wine stem wraps I've made. Are those similar to the ones you saw gia? The ones on top are the first ones I made. The ones on bottom are the most recent. they have a glass bead at the bottom with a different kind of fruit or veggie to differentiate the glasses. IP: Logged |

Very cool! Close to what I saw...the wire was a thicker gauge and there were fewer beads...just a sprinkling at the ends. Those look terrific. Nice job, girlie. IP: Logged |

So, I was watching Oprah yesterday, and she read a quote from Mark Twain that is in her magazine this month. It was about home, and the house you live in, etc. It was beautiful, and I thought, "That would be so pretty in a frame and hung in my parents' house." So, I'm thinking I will do artsy prints of my favorite quotes and poems, choosing one that fits each recipient, then frame them and give them as gifts. Would that be something you all would like to receive, or am I just a nutty word girl? IP: Logged |
|
crowjoy Housemate |
That was a great quote and I think it would make your parents all warm and fuzzy to receive it from you. IP: Logged |
