you can definitely paint clear finish over photos printed on photo paper. i decoupaged a picture of my brother, sister and nephew on a keepsake box i had made them. i used the same stuff that you can usually find in the aisle of paints for wood, etc...

oh! just had an idea I thought I would share...a couple friends just bought condos...I think I might make decoupaged switchplates for them!

All hail the mighty decoupage brush!

If my cat doesn't move fast enough, he may find himself with some decoupage on his tail!

HAHAHAhhahahahah!

Gia, you crack me up!

(image of gia rushing after cat, who is yowling, with foam at the corners of her mouth, lips pulled back in a tight grin, revealing her teeth, hair fuzzy and eyes wild, holding out a big gluey brush, "here kitty kitty!"

I am never crazed, Leanne. Just so you know.

Ooh, a decoupage toothbrush actually sounds really cool.

augh, I can't write any more messages today. I was in the "first base" etc. thread, I got to your post gia, the phrase "little league" popped in to my mind, and now my brain has been destroyed by imagining midgets in baseball uniforms writing sex advice columns and OH GOD MAKE IT STOP!

time for a nap.

Okay, I know that it's been a while since you all taked about and made your glass marble magnets, but I have a question. I want to cover up the back of the magazine picutes before I put the magnets on so it will look nicer. Does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking about just cutting out cardstock and covering the whole thing, or maybe painting the whole back. Has anyone tried either of these? Also, my marbles seem to have scratches and nicks all in them... does that turn out okay in the end or is there any way to buff them out? I'm pretty new at actually making the crafts that I buy all of the supplies for. I usually just have big dreams and then leave everything in the closet.

I made that brown sugar scrub - and I had to test it out. It is amazing. I think I am throwing out my lotion. My skin feels SO good. And I got the best containers. i went to the tuberware section at Target and got plastic kid's snack containers, they are flat and hold about a cup and 1/2. The lids either screw off or half pops up. So it is good for the shower - no broken glass, adn it is easy to hold because it is designed for kids!

I consider myself to be a crafty person, but i've always misunderstood what exactly it was to decoupage. First of all, how do you pronounce that word? And second, is it elmers + water or something u buy in the store? Help me, so when it comes up in conversation I don't have to nod my head and pretend that I know what it means!

DAY-koo-paj (the "page" part sounds like padge but without the d sound. you might not be able to make that sound if you don't speak french, so just fake it, everyone else will.)

and elmer's and water is brilliant and entirely sufficient. people speak of a mysterious compound called modge podge, but I expect it's more of the same.

Is when you apply a cutout picture onto a hard surface. You can use plain ol' Elmers or buy a similar mixture from the craft store. You brush the glue onto the surface and place your picture on top of that - then you spread more glue on top of the picture, usually a couple of coats. For best results, seal with varnish.

Thanks! Now I finally know..but got another question--does anyone know of any cheap craft websites online? I am currently carless at UCLA and can't afford anything at the pricey artsy-fartsy artstores that I live near. I really want to tackle all these ideas on this board, but are missing some vital materials!

I am making soap tonight, well not actually making it, just melting it, coloring and pouring it into heart molds. I have a wedding to go to on saturday and the only thing left on the registary I could afford was a hand towel ($20 for a towel!!) and that seemed so sad, so I am making heart shaped soap to add in, and maybe extra for valentines presents for my friends.

Just thought I'd *bump* this topic because I'm currently trying to figure out what I'll be making for gifts this year. So far:

- monogrammed pillowcases
- marble magnets (again)
- soap (again)
- sweets of some sort

Oh god...

I just had a really funny gift idea.
An Office Voodoo kit.

This will include (in a small box of some kind)

- a very simple genderless ragdoll
- a few sets of stereotypical office-occupant clothes (secretary/boss/coworker/underling)
- some different colored "wigs" (some wool-work you can attach to the head of the doll)
-and of course several pretty sharp sewing pins for...umm...voodoo

if I run out of time with this, I'll just do it with a cardboard doll and paper cut out clothes...

Other than that, I'm making
- scented dusting powder
- bath milk mix in pretty bottles
- possibly a calendar if I can figure out something good-ish to do with it.
- a story book

Check out Big Lots, everyone, if you have one around you. They have those clear and frosted Christmas tree balls that you can paint in for $1.99 for 6, or larger ones 4 for $1.99

They also have lots of other Christmas craft stuff out now, for way cheap.

Idea for melting the soap--
melt colored glycerine (or color your own with food coloring) and pour into ice trays(the square kind) lined with pet. jelly.

They turn out really cute. I did several in diff. shades of blue and put them in a clear bowl/stand in my bathroom. I think it would be cute presented well as a gift.

Yeah, I made several batches like that in shades of blue and green to resemble seaglass for Mother's Day and Teacher Appreciation Week for my son's teacher. Instead of using pet. jelly, I just used unflavored cooking spray. Here's a photo.

Oddly enough, I just stopped by there a couple of weeks ago and bought some of those ornaments. I'm thinking about personalizing them with each recipent's name with etching creme.

I SOOO love that idea! I reckon it could be customized outside of work as well. You know... the Ex-Boyfriend, Ex-Girlfriend Voodoo Kit, the Annoying Neighbor Voodoo Kit... Ha! That would be a cute idea for a housewarming present too.

I'm proud to report that I walked out with only buying 3 items: a giant stocking to hang on my door, a halloween door mat, and some gum.

I'm a new poster and love reading these boards - thanks for all the great ideas. A couple of things I'm working on for inexpensive gifts this year are napkin rings (can be made out of beads, buttons, etc) and wine glass charms - I found a package of 60 rings for $2.99 at Michael's and plan to put different colored beads and maybe charms on them.

Bali...

There are lots of ways to do it, but one really simple version to make dusting powder is to get the perfume of choice in essential oil/oil based form, then blending some of this with a 50:50 mix of corn starch and tapioca flour (or just plain corn starch works too). Some people use chick-pea flour, but I think it's too grainy.

I've experimented with very very thin cocoa-butter shavings in the powder, making vanilla powder by a similar way to how you make your own vanilla sugar...yeah. I like to just include spices in my powder - once it's sat for a while, all of the powder will smell naturally yummy. People seem to like it.

Of course you could go for real unscented talcum powder too, but apparently it's not all that good for you...and besides, corn starch is prolly cheaper.

So far I've made some marble magnets, wine charms and beaded letters. Plan on checking out the brown sugar scrub and making some soap, too.

Note to self: Check out Big Lots.
