Looking for a kit or materials to make room-darkening roller shades. I've got my fabric, just need the room-darkening material and fusible material to put the two together. The kit was available a couple of years ago (June Tailor) but they don't make it anymore. Any advice on a specific product would be great. Any specific fusible product that would work well with a room-darkening material? Thanks!

I don't have a suggestion of a specific product, but I'm sure that the ladies (or gents, of course) at your local fabric store could probably stear you in the right direction. Room darkening material, in my experience, is on huge, long rolls near the decorator fabrics section and is pretty reasonable in price.

Also there is a tutorial HERE that goes into really good detail about how to go about the assembly.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I've been to-or called -all major fabric stores in my area and no one has ever done this or had requests like this before. Hancock Fabrics has a room darkening material, but it's not fusible (will melt when heated). I think I'm running into a dead end on this one...

lwgerhold, any material with a tight weave will keep the sunlight out, hold it up to a light source to test it.
You can iron anything, just that if it is synthetic you will need to put a tea towel or some thickish cotton between your material and the iron. Do a test patch with some off cuts.
Use a spray bottle of water to get some steam up.
It is all in this digs article that jumpinmonkies linked to anyway.

Be brave and don't be dead ended. I imaging that you can't get the kits anymore because people just make them themselves. I know that you will be able to buy the blank rollershade in the curtain section of your haberdashery.
goodluck

edited to say that the fusable webbing you get will depend on the weight of the fabric. Lighter ones for silk and heavier for denim.

I don't have any experience with room darkening fabric, but another method of doing the roller shades that I've read about is to buy fabric stiffener and use that to stiffen the fabric instead of the fusible interfacing. I couldn't find any in the stores here in Edinburgh, but supposedly it's available at many fabric and crafts stores.
