Does anyone know of a site or other source (magazine maybe) that has a bunch of different styles of rooms. I'm particularly looking for bedrooms. I'm trying to get an idea of how I'd like to have my bedroom decorated. Since I like lots of different things I thought actually looking at already put together rooms it will give me some ideas about what I will love and help me find my own kind of style. (wow, that was a long sentence!) IP: Logged |

I have a book called "Creating a Look" by Liz Wagstaff (apparently it's a British publication as I can only find it on Amazon UK -- I have no idea how I ended up with it!) that shows examples of these 12 looks: The Long Island Look The Chinese Look The Italian Look The Moroccan Look The New York Loft Look The Irish Georgian Look The Scottish Look The Mexican Look The Scandinavian Look The Indian Look The French Look The Greek Look I'll scan in the contents page, and if you can't find the book and you like one of the looks, let me know and I can get those pages to you. That book sounds awesome! I'd have a different look in each (of my three) rooms. IP: Logged |

Thanks polly! I stopped by the store last night and picked up two mags. I don't even remember the titles but one has a picture of a bedroom that I would love to sleep in. It'll be awhile before I get settled into my new place and actually get some decorating done. But, when I do I'll take some pics and post them. I spent most of the workday yesterday looking through old pages of the show off your nest thread. hehe, that was lots of fun!

So, in my new apartment, the showerhead is in the wrong place. It's in the middle of the tub, on the long side. Isn't that weird? Has anybody ever encountered this before? I was thinking about replacing the showerhead with something like this, to make the water go down, instead of spraying all over the side curtain like it does now. Does anyone have a better suggestion? IP: Logged |
|
Princessjeanne Housemate |
Not really any suggestions, but just had to say that those showerheads are GREAT. Had one in an old apartment - we totally should have taken it with us and put a crappy cheap one on hte shower. Oh well. IP: Logged |

I've always wanted one of those showerheads! You could also get a showerhead that is handheld. My parents have one of those and I love it. IP: Logged |

Anyone know why my freezer door won't stay open? Is it a leveling thing? too much weight on the door? I hate getting the cold freezer shelf on my back while I dig around. IP: Logged |
|
jstrizzy Housemate |
I would guess it's because it's not level. fridge doors are designed to hold stuff, and even if it was really heavy I can't see why that would make it swing shut rather than open. Mine always swings shut on me, and I know my kitchen is slanted (visibly: when I put a pan of liquid on the stove it all goes to the back). IP: Logged |

Man, I _wish_ my freezer door swung shut instead of open. Once my cat opened it by jumping on it and it swung open and stayed that way all day until I came home from work to find the cat licking thoroughly defrosted meat and perogies. That was a sad day. IP: Logged |

It hurt, and I'm sure getting shot in the eyeball would have been much, much more unpleasant. IP: Logged |

BG, of COURSE that is the reason. Not to sound self-deprecating, I *never* have this shower curtain phenomenon happen to me. IP: Logged |

Seems that some birds have made a substatial nest next to my a/c unit outside my window. I wouldn't care but pieces of nest and bird poo have been coming into my living room under the window cover. I peeked at the nest; it appears to have no eggs in it. Or would they be "buried" in it? Any suggestions as to how to resolve this? Can I even touch the nest without ruining it for the birds? OK, on to the next question: how long do you keep your bills, paystubs, checking account statements, etc? I thought I'd seen an article about this, but maybe this was unrelated to Digs... IP: Logged |
|
quarkiegirl Housemate |
keeps bills for a year, then you can toss them. tax stuff keep for 7 years. not sure about pay stubs though. there was an article about this in, i think real simple, not too long ago. IP: Logged |

my mom says keep your last pay stub for the previous year until you receive your w-2 for that year. IP: Logged |

Thanks, QC. You were right. I copied the info for reference and b/c link wouldn't work: What to turn into confetti and when: Always: Papers with your Social Security number, preapproved credit-card applications. Monthly: ATM and deposit slips, after recording them in your checkbook and reconciling them with your monthly bank statement; credit-card receipts, after checking your statement. Yearly: Bank and credit-card statements, if you don't itemize deductions; monthly and quarterly brokerage statements, after comparing against year-end summaries; paycheck stubs, after reconciling them with W-2 or 1099 forms. I've got more questions, apparently. Thanks for your input: I have lots of unmatched pieces of wood furniture (small stuff) in different finishes. For example, my coffee table is a dark maple almost cherry that doesn't match the light almost birch laminate of the media stand. I'm painting my tv cabinet a green: should I paint the media stand to match? Any experience with how laminate looks painted? IP: Logged |
|
pollyhyper Housesitter |
I think it would look nice if you painted them to match, but not necessary. If you do, though, you're going to have to use a light sandpaper to "scuff" the finish on the laminate so that the paint will stick. You may also be able to find a primer that will stick well to the laminate if you ask your local hardware store incompetents. IP: Logged |

Sanding? Grrr. Nothing is easy. Maybe I'll return it. I've got too many things to paint, move, or organize; dunno about sanding in between all that... Thanks though. IP: Logged |

I think light green and light wood (ie. birch, etc.) actually look nice together. They actually make a lot of furniture in this combo. I just have a personal pet peeve about too many different kinds/shades of wood in the same room. IP: Logged |
|
muppet_girl Housemate |
Hehe, my whole apartment is a collection of how many different wood finishes can fit in one place. Half are in a generic mapley stain on pine that my dad used liberally. Then there's the dressers/bookshelves in peachy-white stain, my dinette in a kind of stained oak-pine, my tall kitchen tiled "bar" that's trimmed with oak. My living room has a mirror trimmed in dad's pine and the current media cabinet is the same. There's my desk, another shade of laminate, plus my cherry-maple coffee table, and, finally, another piece of my dad's that is slightly different because it's got polyurethane on it. I also just got a spice cabinet for the kitchen that matches none of the above. What does match? That three of these pieces are "mission style," or variations thereof. Uh, yeah, PH, you may never want to visit IP: Logged |

pollyhyper Housesitter |
I don't really mind different kinds of wood, but more light w/dark. All my furniture is made of different woods, but at this point (this wouldn't have held true a few years ago) it's almost all stained dark/cherry. It's just a personal thing. Don't mind me or take it personally.

I'd never think of taking offense over my furniture. Let me tell you some time about my former couch nicknamed "Florida Threw Up." IP: Logged |

Next question: think it's possible to make "shelves" out of 1/8" fiberboard? I've got about 50' of it cut into 4' sections, about 6-8" wide. Trying to be creative... IP: Logged |

|
muppet_girl Housemate |
They're gonna hold CDs and videos/dvds. I don't have too many. The cinderblock idea sounds sturdy, though I'd hoped maybe I could do floating shelves. Maybe that's unrealistic. Glass blocks sound really cool though. What do they go for usually? Style? I don't know. My couch is flowery, my walls dark red, my cabinet green, my coffee table wooden and mission style... hmm maybe we should start a digs photo album for ugly couches? mine is hideous, but unnamed at the moment. IP: Logged |

i think you could probably get them for @ $2/block at a building supply place, more at someplace like L0we's. They also make them out of acrylic now...safer? [This message has been edited by pollyhyper (edited 06-16-2004).] IP: Logged |

I think there was an ugly couch contest - I nearly entered my dandruff couch. I'd painted it white with gesso paint & then blue & green sponge painting. And it was great except that when you sat on it? It left flakes on you. IP: Logged |

Yeah that's definitely cool, but last night I tried to find the wall studs and there's only one in the area I'm considering. So basically anything hanging is out. I'm still mulling options... Thanks for all the great ideas! I think I've exhausted my Lounge privileges for a while IP: Logged |

OK, this is sort of house related. I just bought light (pine) wood furniture for my bedroom, which is making me rethink the spring green color I was going to paint the walls. Also makes me think that most light/bright colors are out as well. Since I'm at least anecdotally color-blind, does anyone have suggestions or comments on what color to use on my walls behind the pine furniture? (Note: wine red is out since that's my living room.)
