quote: I love the Easter-egg aspect to tidying blitzes. A fortnight ago I found my poesy ring (a band with something engraved on the inside, in this case LOVE AND LIVE). It dates from 1660 and it would have been cosmically embarrassing to be the person who finally lost it in its 345th year of existence. The stupid cleaner had dropped it into a tea-light holder. At least she didn't nick it. I hope my next finds are the watermelon tourmaline earring that skittered into a parallel universe when I dropped it one day, as it's certainly not on my bedroom floor, and (hangs head with utter shame) my great-grandmother's wedding ring. No wonder my mum won't give me my grandmother's diamond ring. I'm far too messy and careless to be trusted with it. I blitzed the sitting room yesterday. Does anyone else ever get the sneaky feeling that a tidy room is kind of bland? My sitting room looks like an "Minimalist Oriental Antiques" spread in a magazine, but it's really quite dull.

Yup, totally. Neat-as-a-pin homes don't feel lived in to me, although I try to confine my clutter to my own space. IP: Logged |

Our bedroom and bathroom have been severely neglected for about the past four months. There has been clutter and debris taking over. We've just been too lazy to clean it up. Well, yesterday we spent about 5 hours just plowing through it all. It is beautiful and clean now. Last night it was like sleeping in a nice hotel room. We made a pact to keep it this way, so I hope we can. Now we are going through our master bedroom closet, ruthlessly making piles for Goodwill and for giving away. It feels GREAT to be decluttering and actually gaining space. I feel so liberated now. Once we get this project done, we're going to move on to other closets in the house that are packed with junk and have been since we moved in a year and a half ago. IP: Logged |

we just got back from vacation yesterday, and 2 friends are coming to stay tomorrow night, so we've got some hardcore cleaning to do today! there is so much crap in the living room that we can't even pull out the sleeper sofa, let alone have any people move around in here. oy. IP: Logged |

I've been using that star organizer email thingie for about three weeks. Last night, my husband invited over some people for dinner at the last minute, and all I had to do to get ready for company was clean up the project I was working on and do the dishes from breakfast. I'm making progress!

whew, i just moved all my folded up clothes from Broken Dresser to New Dresser, so we can put Broken Dresser out in the trash tomorrow. I feel so dusty and gross and tired but it's DONE and i can have nice organized clothes again, in a dresser where ALL the drawers work, not just three out of five, and i don't have to keep my jeans in a milk crate on the floor anymore. My closet is still clean! But, you know what's terrible? I got a new stereo for my birthday and I still haven't opened it up. My birthday was February 19th and I got the stereo a week before that. Yeah, I know. IP: Logged |

Sophie - Your unfortunate luck is kind of funny! Maybe it's Mother Nature speaking to you I can hear her now "Clean up! I'm coming over!"Has anyone spent hours going through this thread like I just did? You know, rather than dealing with your stuff? Yeah, I still have a Victoria's Secret bag parked on my bed, filled with my stuff from spending the night in Philly on Friday. It sat on my floor for 3 weeks before I changed the contents up from last time and personalized it to Friday and all. My housemate is ultra super clean. Sometimes it's annoying, but mostly, I try to be out of the house while he goes at it. The sound of the vac is too much to bear on a saturday morning. He is so clean tho, and it infiltrates. I hate being forced to do *anything*, but when he's cleaning, it's mostly that I feel like I have to suck it up and do it. He throws stuff out (which pisses me off immensely) so I know that if I don't clean up, it'll be in the trash. Bills and paperwork are a huge incentive - ya know, there's a reason they place 'work' on the end of 'paper'. My bedroom is fairly clean nowadays. I'm surprised that my daughter cleans her room every few days! She never used to, and being the slobqueen I am, I never required her to do it - she started when her friends started coming regularly. When will I just become a clean and tidy person? I was hoping it would happen automatically with age. IP: Logged |

More progress! The master bedroom closet has been completely cleaned out and clothes washed and neatly organized. There are now two HUGE bags for yard sale/Goodwill. There are only clothes in the closet now that we actually really love and wear. Yay! IP: Logged |

i don't know where to begin describing my clutter, magpie mentality and resistance to tidiness. but i always thought, ok, i'm messy but not dirty. ie, i live in clutter, not filth. well, after a winter of wearing my big houseslippers-that-ate-manhattan [they're big enough to feel you can stomp cities in them], i went barefoot into my kitchen today the floor is so sticky it tried to eat my foot! i am officially a biohazard. I got my star organizer email today, and one of the things listed was to organize one's closet and only have clothing in it that one would wear. Um, my closet is actually pretty clean, but the floor, laundry baskets, bed, and ironing board are now apparently my closet. I guess I should pick up every item of clothing and put it away, but why does this seem so daunting??? But the dishes in my sink are from Monday night, rather than the weekend, so that's better right? Maybe? *Hangs head in shame* IP: Logged |

I finally signed up for the star organizer thing, which is rather useful, as opposed to the fly lady, which was annoying. But I have issues with the point values assigned to some of the tasks -- doing all the dishes in the sink is only 5 points?!? Same as wiping down a shelf? I'm giving myself 40 points for doing the massive amount of dishes in my sink tonight. IP: Logged |

I think with the dishes thing it is only five points because that is on there almost every day, so the assumption is that there isn't a lot of dishes to do. But yeah, sometimes I adjust the point value depending on how realistic it is for my needs at the time. IP: Logged |

Slob Queens, I made a new thread just for the Star Organizer, since someone had mentioned doing that a while ago. It's called *** Organizer (how original, right?). Come join me!! IP: Logged |

I had today off - unplanned, didn't know until yesterday afternoon that I'd be taking it off. So - I went to the organization store! I bought a thing to put all my earrings on (and did that), I bought two little organization baskets for under the bathroom sink (did that, and also cleaned out the bathroom drawers), I bought one of those expandable step things for cupboards - and put all the spices on it. I also bought a thing to go in my drawer so I can organize my socks etc - haven't done that yet. While nothing is all that noticeable really - it's nice that stuff is done. I think I might have to go find some other portion of the house that needs some attention because it felt SO good to get stuff organized... IP: Logged |

My husband is getting to really appreciate my cleaning efforts. This morning I was making the grocery list and I asked him to check and see if we had marjoram. He looked in the cupboard I keep the spices in and said "You need to organize this cupboard next." So I followed Meggo's example and bought one of those step thingies for the lower shelf, and a turntable for the middle one, and now all my spices are nice and organized. My husband seems disproportionately impressed by all of this. IP: Logged |

I have been getting these emails from my email host saying my account will be shut down if I don't clean it out. I was a bit miffed since I try to only keep one page of emails in my inbox. However, today I discovered, sorted, and cleaned out 700+ sent emails and probably that many in my trash. Hooray for wasting time at work! IP: Logged |

I am proud to say that the ONLY dishes currently in my sink are a ladle and a glass. Having parents over for dinner did wonders for my house.

We're going out of town and are having some friends stay the night with us on the same day we fly back into town, so I have been working on overdrive to get the house tidied up. Okay, well, I worked one night on overdrive, and I fear tonight is going to be a very long night. Anyway, it's amazing what the "threat" of friends coming over will do to your cleaning discipline. Our garage sale pile grew much larger last night! But I always do this...I should be spending my time doing a good deep cleaning (dusting things that haven't been dusted in months, cleaning up dog hair, etc), but instead, I end up spending my time rearranging furniture, putting out recent pictures, weeding through clutter that the friends will never even see, so I never make it to the actual cleaning. But, it does feel good to get rid of stuff and stuff and more stuff. Ahhh, I'm so proud of my purging efforts last night! pats self on back IP: Logged |

This weekend I cleaned our bedroom and bathroom. It took me five hours!!! I found $5+ in change all over the floor and room, not counting what I found in pockets. I made the biggest pile of dirty laundry ever; it took up the whole hallway. So far I've done about 7 loads and almost hit the halfway point. I don't think our bedroom has been this clean since we moved in, and it's so nice to be in now. Every time we've cleaned the house, we've left our room for last since we can just shut the door and not let anybody in. Wish I'd taken before and after shots! IP: Logged |

I am officially a slob, and am thrilled to know that I am in great company! Ever since I was a little kid I've just been messy. My whole family is slobby, our house was filled with millions of piles of paper, junk, clothes, and god-knows-what. Growing up we had about 3 junk drawers in our kitchen and a basement and attic stuffed to the brim with clutter. My biggest problem is that I am a pack-rat. I just can't bring myself to throw things out. I develop sentimental attachments to candy wrappers, old movie posters, ticket stubs, beer mats, magazine ads, you name it. I think what I really need to start doing is taking all the "stuff" i've accumulated over the years and doing something productive with it. Oh, add to that my intense laziness when it comes to putting stuff away. I am the type of person who feels very at home keeping my clothes strewn about, my books, make-up, shoes, and schoolwork where ever I last used them, etc. The funny thing is that I rarely lose things. What looks like clutter and disorganziation to non-slobs (namely my hyper-neat and tidy flatmates) is just cleverly disguised "creative organization." For example, my flatmate wanted to borrow my red nail polish and asked where it was, a little dubiously because she knows how untidy my bedroom is. Without getting up from the kitchen table I told her "bookshelf near my bed, top shelf, left side about 1/2 way to the middle, near my cough syrup." And i was right! HA! score one for the slob queens! IP: Logged |

I've fallen off the wagon again, folks. Clutter and debris once again reign supreme. I want to be organized and clean, and I can do it, but I just can't KEEP it that way! How do you "unslob" yourself? I've heard that it takes 21 days to form a new habit (like replace a bad habit with a good habit). I cannot keep the clutter away for 21 days. The closet is a mess again, we're living out of the clothes basket again, and the bathroom looks like a bomb went off. Again. As much as I LOVED it when we cleaned it and it was so pretty and nice, we still are just lazy slobs. Bleh. It's really disheartening. I see cute little organizer things in the stores and I almost buy them, but then I think, why bring something so pretty into the mess? It won't stay nice because for some reason, I won't let it. What do you all do when you get it all pretty and clean to KEEP IT THAT WAY? IP: Logged |

My sister is a stay at home mom with 3 kids ages 1, 3 and 4 and she keeps a pretty tidy and clutter-free house. I was talking to her about how I always end up with stuff piled up everywhere and she said that to prevent it from getting in that situation, you have to make it a point to put stuff away. That's all--just put it away. She said she feels like all she does all day is put crap away. Something ends up in the kitchen and she puts it back in the garage. Bills end up on the table and she puts them in the bill organizer. She said yes, it's a pain, but if you don’t want crap lying all around, you just have to do it. I try to follow that mentality—emphasis on the word try. I try to remind myself that unless I plan on living in a world of clutter my whole life, I'm eventually going to have to put stuff away. It may not be today or this weekend or next week, but eventually, I WILL have to put it away. So would I rather spend 30 seconds today putting the bills in the filing cabinet, or would I rather spend half an afternoon 3 months from now putting all the bills from the last 3 months in the filing cabinet? (Of course, I say all this while I currently have a couple stacks of paper sitting on the kitchen counter not to mention my bedroom, but I try to do it with other things like laundry and just other general "stuff".)
quote: That is exactly me! On Clean Sweep, there was a homeowner who kept everything--kept lots of stuff for sentimental reasons and kept lots of other stuff to give to their kids one day. The organizer guy told them that becuase they were keeping so much stuff FROM the past and FOR the future, they weren't able to live IN today. Their lives were being run by "past" and "future" clutter. I thought that was a good point and it has helped me weed through lots of things. IP: Logged |
