You know what's galling? When the anal tidy people are right. For years I've had tidy friends tell me "a place for everything and everything in its place". I've always thought yeah, I have a place for everything, it's called the floor.

But turning one of the spare rooms in my house into a study, I realised that one of my semi-permanent messes is presents I buy for people and haven't yet got to the Post Office to send. I assigned one drawer in my new study to bits and pieces I'm procrastinating about posting to various friends, and another to bubble wrap, packing tape and jiffy bags, and bang, little messes vanished from beside the stereo, on the side table, in the bathroom (? not sure how it got there), all over the house.

ETA: why is it always my post that comes at the top of each page in this thread? Yee-fan, are you secretly my mum?

All I'd like to say is, everyone, get some Lysol and a cloth, go outside to your car, and clean your steering wheel RIGHT NOW. I've been using these disinfecting wipes on everything this week since I have a very contagious respiratory virus-- I wiped off the steering wheel yesterday, and the cloth was absolutely BLACK. Disgusting. It took three cloths to clean the whole thing, and this comes from someone who keeps her car ridiculously tidy. Blech.

You are so right. My mother always told me to clean while cooking, put things away immediately, wash dishes right after eating, etc. I always hated this, but now what am I doing? Telling myself to put the laundry away right when I bring it home, wash the dishes right away and such. Bugs me that she's right.

Hey--this is weird! What happened to the post I made yesterday about my house being a mess when my husband's parents came over?

It disappeared! Too bad that won't happen to my clutter!

Heads up for those who like the IDEA of flylady, but not the inbox reality.

http://www.starorganizer.com sends you an email (only one!) each morning with 3 simple tasks to do, and 3 challenging tasks, and it gives you different point values. The goal is to get 50 points a day.

Sounds more complicated in my explanation, but check it out! I signed up and was ready to go, but being sick all day has derailed all of my grand plans.

Okay, I subscribed to this website, too. I'm hoping it helps.

I'm like you, Greschya; Flylady was nice in concept, but I don't need that kind of e-mail insanity.

Or at least a thread where we can report back, and let others know we were good and cleaned. Kind of a SMAO for cleaning...

Edited because now and know are not the same word.

I just touched up all the slightly grubby paint in my kitchen. In order to do this, I had to take ALL the pots and pans off the open shelving. Some of the ones I don't use often were a bit dusty, so I washed every pot and pan on the open shelves and put them back on the freshly painted shelves (after they dried of course). It looks a thousand times better, and encouraged me to clean all the rest of the kitchen. It's freaking spotless now. I want to cook.

So, I got my fifty points done. My closet is as clean as it's been in a long time, and I took the opportunity to pack up all my maternity clothes too. Of course, I spent 40 minutes instead of 10, but it's done. I got rid of stuff that doesn't fit, and put everything that needs to be mended or altered in a big basket for when I have more time. I also discovered I own four pairs of khaki pants. Must stop buying khaki pants.

I heard somewhere (I hope it wasn't here and I'm just repeating a previous post!!) Anyway, I heard that a good motivator is to seriously clean the smallest room in your house - give it a thorough scrub and polish and then you'll feel good about it, therefore feel good about yourself and therefore have more energy to do the next room. There may be something in this, or maybe they're just trying to make sure our loos sparkle!

You know Paula, I do beleive that is true. I'll confess I'm a slob queen but in order to try to keep it down I'll do at least my bed. Then that extends to the rest of my room. I want my room to look as good as my bed so I put everything away.
Then my room looks great and I want my closet to look as tidy and so on...

It actually works for me. (Well for a period of time. I have a cleaning cylce)

Yeah, I definitely need an alternative to FlyLady. I tried it last year but had to cut off my subscription after a week because I kept getting email after email saying, "Are you wearing lace up shoes? Is your sink shining? Hugs! You're doing so great!" Um, thanks FlyLady, but as a matter of fact, I'm not wearing lace up shoes at home because I wear them at work all day. I think FlyLady is better suited to a stay at home mom.

I like the star-email thingy. For me, however, washing dishes seems like more than a 5-point task. I, um, STILL haven't washed all the dishes from my housewarming party on, um, Feb. 26th. But I really like it overall--the fact that it includes things like changing the sheets and stuff. Last night I spent so much time washing dishes that I didn't ge to anything else, but I hope that in the future it will be better. But I did change the cat box too, so I felt like I did *something.*

Did anyone who signed up for the Starorganizer thingie get the email for today (Friday the 10th)? I didn't get it, and I'm wondering if my email spazzed out, or if it didn't get sent. I've been doing so good, I don't want to get out of the habit.

Um. Ok. So I have to admit it- I take a lot of enjoyment from deleting those starorganizer emails. It's like cleaning for my email inbox. I know, I know- that's not helping. However, I did condense the piles on my desk into one pile, washed my sheets and remade my bed.

I am a closet slob queen, literally a CLOSET slob queen. My house looks really good most of the time, but if you were to open a closet-- prepare for an avalanche! I wouldn't be surprised if Capone's lost treasure was behind a box of old prom dresses...

I did it. I, Nakedmarzi, cleaned my closet. Now this is no ordinary closet- it's a pretty large walkin with everything packed in. I even found that diamond necklace I lost in 1999 and a Naughty By Nature audio cassette. Oh the excitement! I ended up with a gigantic bag of trash and another gigantic bag of stuff for Goodwill/the Salvation army with at least 20 pairs of shoes, 9 pairs of pants, a suitcase, and 20-30 tops. Yeah, I have a lot of clothes. I'm wondering if I should try to sell some of the clothes as some of them are high-end fashion pieces, but that's just more work and organizing. I'm all organized out. My closet is even organized by jackets, pants, skirts, dresses, long sleeves, short sleeves, thick straps, spaghetti straps, and strapless now. And to think, it only took 5 hours. Is this what clean people do with their time?

Oooh, Nakedmarzi, I am so jealous. Our walk-in closet can barely be walked in. We have a nice little dirty laundry sorter that sorts into three different mesh bags (colors, whites, towels). But where is all the dirty laundry? In the middle of the closet floor. So, the walk-in closet can be walked in, I guess, as long as you don't mind climbing Mount Dirtyclothes to get where you're going.

And there's stuff in there that I wore in high school. Yeah, I graduated in 1995.

Something MUST be done. All the shoes have started showing up on the bedroom floor, just outside the closet door. Even THEY'RE afraid to go in there.

Send me good closet cleaning and organizing vibes, y'all. Maybe Saturday will be The Day.

We should start a craigslist for Digs... we could call it Digslist!

I think that's a fantastic idea. A thread where you can post what you have and how much you want for it, then let people negotiate through email (so the thread doesn't get all tangled and confusing), and edit the post once the thing's been sold.

I have a few things but I'll have to wait until I get home to check sizes etc.

Oooh. I'd totally be in. One of the factors in my slob queen-ness is a few books and articles of clothing that I feel like I could sell for a little bit, but I haven't made the effort to do so, so they float around my little apartment. Plus I love secondhand clothing, so this could work out very well.

Let's see... it really depends what year I wore the clothes. Some are a size 6 or 7. Most are a size 10 (around the time I gained some weight) and some are a size 12 or 14 when I went on that two year long ice cream and full-fat food rampage.

So, in a fit inspired by ya'll, I cleaned the bathtub with this wonderful cleaner called scrub free. You just spray on, let it sit 30 seconds or a minute, and wipe off. However, "tougher jobs may require longer penetration time or an additional application. Prevent soap scum build up with regular use." Either it's a subliminal message to get me to use their product, or it's common sense. Hm. New, clean shower curtains are great too.

We also have stuff. Lots of stuff, and no place for it. Lots and lots of paper and no filing cabinet. J just went through a lot of it, though.
