I found a website with some pretty good info/advice on it. It's Cleanteam.com. They mainly sell clening products that suit thier own "speedcleaning method", but they have a section of speedcleaning rules and decluttering rules (taken from books that they sell, of course)that make sense. A lot is commen sense, or stuff you already know or has been discussed in this thread, but it's kind of nice to have everything laid out. A sort of kick in the pants to get you going. Anyway, it's here if you want to take a look: http://www.thecleanteam.com/productdetail.cfm?id=books AS far as my own progress- I know I need to start slowly, one area at a time. I also have the problem of to much stuff and nowhere to put it. So, I figured that I;d start with kitchen cabinets and pantry areas. That way, I'd clean out space to put stuff. IP: Logged |

I’ve been reading Organizing from the Inside Out by Julie Morgenstern and it’s a great book. One of her main points is that being organized means different things for each person. What quick fix is being promoted in an article might not be the right idea for me. And you have to face why you’ve got so much clutter before you can control it. And then she goes room by room on how to tackle it, has a “no brainer toss list” and a timeline on how long it will probably take. Now the last section where she’s got a weekly schedule worked out with only 5 ½ hours sleep is insane. Less sleep does not = better use of time. IP: Logged |

I've been trying something new on my desk and it's working marvelously. You know that pile of "I'll get to it later" papers that seem to accumulate on the upper corner or some tucked-away area of the desk? I read a suggestion somewhere that if you absolutely couldn't force yourself to deal with them as they arrive, at least buy one of those vertical magazine files and keep it in there so that your desk stays open and uncluttered. I've been trying this since the new year started and all the sudden I don't have as much trouble sitting down at my desk. It's always pretty and has lots of space open--suddenly I actually feel like working on my thesis or sitting down and writing cover letters. Hooray! IP: Logged |

quote: I did the exact same thing; I just got that book! It's great. Several of the points in the book were really helpful to me. For instance, one of the number one causes of clutter is that things have no place. That one I'd already figured out, but I'm working on it. I put the rice bowls in the cupboard after all, and they're so much better there; now I can look at and admire them every day. Another really good tip in the book, as Bureinato mentioned, is that she says that instead of trying to discipline yourself to someone else's system, you should try to figure out how you actually work -- i.e. if you habitually drop your jacket and bag by the front door, just hang some hooks near the door so you can keep it neat. So when I thought about the receipts and mail all over the place, I realized that when I get home, I get the mail and sort it into piles, and then I realize I'm ravenous and go make dinner. But the other factor is I've gotten really good about asking for receipts for everything, so I can just stack them up and enter into Quicken all at once, and I really only pay bills twice a month. Really I had the papers pretty organized; it was just that they were in stacks or strewn about the living room waiting for the next step. When I was cleaning out my closet shelves to make room for the board games, I found some colored envelopes. I bought a red leather tote at Target, and now when I get the mail, I sort it into the envelopes, put them all in the tote and then carry the whole thing over to the computer and deal with each category of things at regular intervals. Meanwhile, they're neatly organized and stored! I am so excited. IP: Logged |

Yesterday on one of the episodes of clean sweep, one of the rooms they cleaned out was this woman's office. They found her glasses that she had been missing in there for a year!!! Apparently she'd just been doing without. So far I haven't lost lost things like that in my clutter. Kinda made me want to clean, I'm currently missing one glove from two different pairs, I wonder if they're wandering around here somewhere... IP: Logged |

I finally went to Target and bought a bunch of containers so I could get organized. Cleaned out and organized the linen closet, my hall closet and half of my kitchen cupboards. I finally got the christmas decorations put into a container and stored away. It is amazing how much more space I have when I put things away. Now I just have to tackle my desk area and my closet. And if all goes well I will finally be able to stay orgazined!! [This message has been edited by Melissa55379 (edited 01-19-2004).] IP: Logged |

Oh the linen closet... I don't even want to tackle that. I opened it today to put some dishclothes in it and shuddered. It was cleaner once - no, who am I kidding? It was only semi-clean when it was empty. Meanwhile - Hubby had decided this weekend to put up this shelving unit thing we bought. He wanted it for his clothes. I put the ki-bash on that until he actually goes THRU his clothes to throw stuff out. I used to be able to say "But they don't fit anymore." and now, since he's on week three of working out - he's convinced he'll fit into them again and we can't possibly get rid of them. Ugh. I bought some of those space saver bags that you vaccum the air out of...the small ones are great for the clothes that "I KNOW I'll fit into again." The large ones were too cumbersome, but the small ones were perfect. IP: Logged |

Some guy on one of those "helpful hints" show - actually made his own space saver bags. He used garbage bags, hooked up the vaccuum - put the stuff in the bag, sucked out the air, tightly fastened the bag shut with rubber bands. Never tried it myself - and I would think that a good labeling system would need to be in place for this! - but it would be worth a shot. What's the worst that could happen? Do they make clear garbage bags....? Hmmmmm. IP: Logged |

Ok, when I get home, I'm throwing away ten things. And I found some compact photo albums at the office supply store while I was at lunch. 72 photos fit in a 7 X 9 book which fits into a pocket that keeps dust out. When I get home I'm dragging out my big old fashioned photo albums and picking them clean, and then they are going into the yard sale box. OK, the title Confessions of the Slob Queen is truly appropriate for this one: So Bachelor #1 just called to confirm for date #3, only whereas he'd previously mentioned going to the movie theater near his apartment, now he wants to go to one near mine. And pick me up. Of course I'd counted on him not seeing my apartment tonight, and I've been going out and doing other things rather than finish cleaning around here. He swears it can't be messier than his apartment, which had 8 people in it all last weekend for a frisbee tournament (and which he's had all week to clean, but it sounds like he's been on the same plan I have) -- but trust me, bathtub ring, kitchen grunge, and piles of stuff sorted to take to the thrift store are pretty darn messy. I may have to convince him to go to the late movie just so I can get this place vaguely presentable. Slob slob slob. IP: Logged |

I'm so traumatized! My bf's brother came over to help us with a computer problem and we were joking about what a mess our place was, and he says, "Yeah, every time I come home from here, Mom asks, 'So was their place an atrocious mess?'" My bf started laughing and I was like, "Oh my god, I'm so embarrassed!" Bf actually asked, "Why would you be embarrassed?" and his brother reiterated, "Well, she didn't say 'atrocious' mess, she was just joking around." I expect comments about my slovenliness from my mother, but my bf's mother is the sweetest thing on earth and never says a word. So I'm probably going to spend most of tomorrow cleaning. I know it won't last though because of these things: 1. Cleaning is energy-consuming. I'll do one room, like the kitchen, or the bedroom, and then I won't have any energy left over for the rest of the place. 2. We have more stuff than places to put said stuff. I really want to buy things like more bookshelves/shelving/storage, but funds are tight and it's not an option. When I go to my friends houses, I keep wondering, "Where are their scattered bills, kitschy knickknacks from friends, overflowing books, piles of magazines and cat toys?" Is there a secret, or do we just have more stuff than most people? 3. Cleaning is BORING. I was a messy kid, no matter how many fights I had with my parents over it, and now I'm a messy adult. How come guys get to have messy bachelor pads and it's okay? As I said, tomorrow is going to be cleaning day, but in the long term, I think a housekeeper is in order once the cash flow is back. A friend of mine has one for $33 twice a month. That works. As she put it, "I don't mind doing dishes, or laundry, but I don't dust or wash floors or windows." As a slob queen, I'd love to give up my crown, but I fear it's too late. IP: Logged |

quote: Those first pictures made me physically ill. I am a slob, and I have always been a slob, but I am not that bad. I have dishes in the kitchen that need to be washed, but my kitchen does not stink. I have books stacked up in the spare bedroom against the wall, b/c we still have to bring the bookcase up to the apt from my car, but the room does not stink. Ooohhhh, that was nasty! I am a slob in the sense that if I take something out/use it/play with it/look at it, I (nor my Stupendous J) will return it to its home -"Are you too good for your home!?" tee hee But seriously, I like things to be organized, and it irritates the piss out of me when things are ugly and/or smelly. I'm just too lazy to fix them. Recently, though, I did a TON of laundry, and stupendous J took that as an inspiration to be more clean i.e., put up his po-lice paraphanelia, put his dirty laundry in the laundry basket, and keep our massive collection of magazines contained to two places in the apartment. Sigh. IP: Logged |

Speaking of possessions, call me crazy but I love de-cluttering and getting rid of old items because it means less to clean! I'd love to do the whole "stream-lined, ultra-minimalist" apartment thing but I'm too much of a packrat. But over time I'd like to think I'm leaning more towards the latter and concentrating on making a statement with must have belongings, like couches and beddings, than with stuff like knick nacks. (which drive me crazy, they collect *so* much dust) *laugh* Holy babbly. IP: Logged |

Super T now holds the title of Slob Queen. My name is Galaxy_Girl and I am a slob. Not only do I have clothing, papers, & shoes dropped everywhere including the kitchen (???) my car is much of the same. I have to say though reading this board made me feel not so alone in my lazy/slovenly tendencies. As for Cleaning. Downstairs (Kitchen, Dining Room, Office, Living Room)I go with the big clean, once weekly method. I won't let myself watch the Saturday "Trading Spaces"/"While You Were Out" until the downstairs is picked up and there is laundry in the washer. It seems to be the only way I can keep things caught up. Of course if I have some one come to the door in the middle of the week I still don't let them in because by Sunday night the mess has started to accumulate again. I do clean the kitchen nightly, I hate to cook in a messy kitchen. Upstairs: (Bathroom & Guest Bedrooms) get cleaned when there is company coming (about once a month). Our bedroom gets clean when ever I get around to it which isn't very often. Of course in my husbands defence he "cleans". His version involves stacking things in neat piles and putting them in drawers though so while a appriciate (sp?) his help I still end up going back through the rooms he has cleaned. I have tried the list method (divide the chores/night) it never seems to work for me because something comes up can I fall behind and never get caught up agaim. Oh well slobs of the world unite. Now if only I could figure out how to keep my car from looking like a mobile dumpster??? Hmmm? IP: Logged |

Sadly, now that I have a big house that I own and i am allowed to do things to, we don't have t.v. anymore. Really, those kinds of shows are some of the few that I actually miss. HOWEVER, I have recently discovered that Netflix rents DVDs of Trading Spaces !!@! HOORAY! IP: Logged |

I had to create a rotating cleaning schedule just to keep up with the mess! So now I just clean/tidy up one room a day, and it keeps my apartment relatively organized and livable. I find that now I'm not overwhelmed by the contents of my home as much, which is a big improvement, considering I was ready to commit arson! :s

Hello, I'm Rose. And I am a slob too. Can anyone answer this... Why is it that we let the house go completely bizerk and then when we do get the inspiration to clean it... we clean it spotless. Its like we turn into SuperCleaners. Think about it. Most slobs are the best cleaners. Why is that? IP: Logged |

I've been on the search for my own answer to my question. I've concluded that some of our problems are do to the fact that we have super high standards for cleaning. As things get messier we start to imagine how much more work we are going to have to put into getting things sparkling clean... so we put it off and it gets messier and we put it off more- until we can't stand it any more and then we clean clean clean. Well- thats my cycle at least. One quote from the organizer lady helped me though. It said something like, "you don't have to clean perfectly, just clean". I thought sincerely, "Wow- thanks for the permission"... (You see my Mother was a complete clean freak...) Okay I'm stopping because this is starting to sound like a therapy session... well, at least its free.

When I clean, for example, the kitchen, I will wipe down every cabinet, surface, and appliance. But this only happens once in a blue moon. I don't know why it is, except that by the time I get around to cleaning, everything is in need of a thorough once-over. IP: Logged |

My method for cleaning up after my moderately slobby tendencies is to take 2 big rubbermaid-like bins - put them in the middle of a room, and toss anything that is out of place in one, and anything to give away-throw away - donate in another. It's amazing how much cleaner everything seems after that - and it makes dusting and vacuuming so much simpler. Less clutter = less chance to be a slob. Anything beyond dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning the bathroom only gets done before my mom comes to visit. IP: Logged |
