I guess this is the right place for this question... When I moved into my apartment, I got a hand-me-down mattress from my parents. They always raved about how great this mattress was. They moved 1200 miles away and decided to just give the mattresses to me. This is fantastic! Except... my parents like soft mattresses and my boy and I like firm mattresses. So, we haven't been sleeping well and I sink towards him because he's so much bigger than me. So, I've been looking online for mattress pads. Would a nicer foam pad make it firmer and more comfy? At least give more support? Is there a way to make the mattress firmer? IP: Logged |

My grandfather uses an appropriately sized sheet of plywood under his side of the bed since my grandmother prefers a much softer mattress. He's been doing this for 50+ years, so it must work. IP: Logged |

Well, I'm guess I'm going to have to try this! I thought about it but didn't see how it could work but it seems it does. Plus, it's alot cheaper than those body foam things for the bed. IP: Logged |

The board beneath the mattress will help support the mattress and keep the middle from sagging, and will also make the bed much firmer. You may want to look into the foam pad for the top anyway, if the bed isn't so comfortable after putting the board beneath. The plywood trick works well on old couches, too. IP: Logged |

They actually make a fold-out thing to put under couch cushions to keep them from sagging, I wonder if they make them for beds as well? IP: Logged |

Totally seconding the plywood. They *do* make special folding things to go between mattress and box spring, but plywood is *so* much cheaper. I have an old cruddy mattress and I cut plywood for underneath then put a foam eggcrate thing under the mattress cover on top. Total cost of about $25 for the plywood and foam, and now poof-comfy bed. IP: Logged |

Well, bought the plywood last night and tried that. It worked pretty well!! Firmed it up just a bit but enough to help sleep. I think I'll go buy some foam for extra support and so I don't sink to his side as much! Thanks ya'll! IP: Logged |
