Ok, my boy and I have a serious ant problem in our house. We have been paying Terminix for over a year to get rid of these bastards and they are STILL HERE. I can't take it anymore. The last time they came out was three weeks ago and they had some kind of "new" product that should wipe them out in three weeks. Here I am three weeks later ready to go postal on those bastards. Seriously, I am going nuts over this. They are ALL OVER the kitchen. We put bread in the oven to keep it off the counters and out of the way and I went to get a slice and guess what....oh, yes, there were ants all over the bread....in the over. I freaked...it's like they're actually getting worse. Mind you, my boy and I are not slobs....we wash the dishes every night, we meticulously clean the counters and leave nothing out that ants could possibly be attracted to. What is up with this and does anyone know how we can get rid of them? Please help me!!!! The boy is calling Terminex for a refund, since they have a money back guarantee, but is there someone else I can call to come out, or any other way to get rid of the nasty little insects? The boy is out golfing right now and he has no idea that instead of watching football tomorrow, we're battling ants. PLEASE HELP ME BEFORE I LOSE MY SANITY!!! IP: Logged |

What kind of ants are they? I'm guessing from the problems you're having that they're "piss ants" or grease ants... little tiny almost colorless, pinkish ants? They are such a pain to get rid of and they swarm the craziest things. I think in the past I've gotten this poison that you mix with shortening and put in little dollops on cardboard squares and leave out. They go nuts for the shortening and eat the poison, buh bye. The poison is liquid... I wish I could remember the name but I probably don't even know it. I think the box is red or red and black. If they're black ants they must have a nest somewhere in a plant or something. If you find the next and get it outside that should take care of the problem. I feel your pain. The bugs in Florida are enough to drive a person over the edge sometimes. Hang in there. IP: Logged |

I had a major ant problem too. I still have a few ants but I got rid of the majority of them. The first thing I did was to put up all food. Next, I watched to see where the ants were coming in and used caulk to seal up the cracks and crevices. I sprayed the countertops, window sills and any other place I saw the ants with plain white vinegar. The vinegar is a good repellent. I have a spray bottle with vinegar handy, and I kept repeating the application wherever I saw them. I also sprinkled a little boric acid under my sink because I saw that they were congregating down there too. You can buy boric acid powder at the hardware store (Home Depot). All of these things have helped control the ants. Just make sure that no pets can get into the boric acid. Here are a couple of links which describe how to make boric acid bait for ants. http://fireant.tamu.edu/materials/factsheets/FAPFS024_2002rev.pdf http://www.mcn.org/c/irapilgrim/un07.html [This message has been edited by dallas214 (edited 09-27-2003).] IP: Logged |

Ditto on the boric acid. I have a product by Raid which is basically boric acid in a sugary sirup, and it works almost overnight. IP: Logged |

Okay, this is going to sound strange but I've always heard to put flour out and the ants won't cross the flour line. I also have tried "Terror" ant killer and it's worked for me. It's a liquid you just put out on cardboard and it kills them. I got it at a home depot. like store I think. IP: Logged |

Yes, boric acid. You can mix in a dish with some sugar and the ants will go for it. The boric acid will start eating away at their exoskeleton, according to my bug-nerd boyfriend. Also, you can put some behind any cracks in the kitchen (ie. if there is room behind the counter backsplash, etc.) Just keep away from pets and children, PLEASE. IP: Logged |

We had a massive ant problem when I lived in a mobile and instant grits came to the rescue. The ants would eat their fill and go away, never to return becuase the grit had swollen up inside them and they exploded. Not a pretty thought, but an effective strategy considering that I didn't want to risk boric acid with three cats and my little dog too. IP: Logged |

Sometimes ants can make their home in between walls, which makes them hard to get rid of. We had that happen in our last house, the experience was very similar to what you're describing. Our house was spotless, but they were still everywhere. One night I came home, sat on my bed to take my shoes off without turning the lights on... my other half walked in behind me and switched the light on and started freaking out. I was sitting on a bed that was literally covered with hundreds of ants. I felt like there were bugs crawling on me for weeks after that. What ended up killing them off was this product I found at a health food store. I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called, but the active ingredient was ground flowers. When you grind a certain flower (chyrsanthemum, I think?) it releases pyrethrin which kills most bugs. The container said it was safe to actually apply it to your pet's fur to get rid of fleas, so I wasn't worried about them getting it on their feet. I sprinkled it along every wall in the house, waited a day or two and then vacuumed it up, along with tons of dead ants. And that was it, I never saw them again. Sorry I can't recall the name, but it did come in a tall cylinder and had an orange-yellow label with green writing. I saw some at the health food store the other day, so I know they still make it. Good luck with those ants. Sarah IP: Logged |

It's been a while since I posted this, but just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. Sweet Tea, I can't imagine having ants on my bed, you poor thing. Luckily they haven't made their way in here, but it wouldn't shock me to see them. We've since caulked the kitchen and sprayed vinegar. So far, it's gotten better, but they're not gone. I suggested the boric acid to the boy, but he said that he tried it already, but the little bastards actually pick it up and move it. Is that crazy or what??? We haven't mixed it with sugar though, so maybe we'll try that. Thanks guys! IP: Logged |

Hi Pixiegirl. I remember when I was about 12 there was an abnormal amount of ants in our kitchen. We couldn't figure out where it was coming from. After months of searching we looked in the tube of one of our window shades and they had built a nest in there. So it seems like there is DEFINITELY a nest somewhere. The key is to look in places that you'd least expect, and I'm sure you'll find them. IP: Logged |

I used to think that pouring boiling water on the nests was a good clean way to kill off ants, but the bug guy just told my friend and I that boiling water is a good way to make them multiply uncontrollably. So the moral is don't pour boiling water on ants. (That just sounds cruel! I can't believe I did that!) IP: Logged |

It wasn't ants, but I recently rid myself of a millipede problem. Environmentalists should stop reading right around now... Go to Home Depot and get some of the granular, outdoor pesticide. Make sure it lists the bugs you're trying to kill on the label. Put this stuff in a spreader (like you use for putting down grass seed) and create a barrier around your house. Then, on the same day (that's important), get any pets out of the house, and deploy one indoor fogger per room according to the label's directions. Leave for several hours while this is going on and upon your return, open up some windows. I had a really annoying problem with little millipedes getting into my house, and I hated it, but this solved the problem. IP: Logged |
