I've just moved into a new room - an attic. I painted most of it yellow, but there's a center "beam" that I haven't painted yet. It's low (5' or so)and I thought it might be wise to make it a different color so that I, and any guests I happen to have, notice it and don't hit our heads.

I was thinking fabric might be a way to go, maybe even add some batting in case people run into it anyway. My dad helped me move in and almost cracked his head open.

Who's put fabric on walls? What kind of fabric did you use? What kind of glue won't damage plaster? Will bedsheets work? How hard was it? Help me, please!

Ooh, weird psychic connection. Mander and I are thinking to put fabric on the walls with liquid starch ala something I saw in another thread. I'll try to remember which one. Anyway, we haven't done it yet... you go first!

My mom used liquid startch to put up a fabric border - apparently it's supposed to be really gentle on the wall underneath. I don't know how this would work with batting though.

Maybe you could use magnets? Like if you put some heavy duty magnets up on the ceiling next to the beam - evenly spaced out - and then put the opposite magnet side in the fabric?
That way it's minimal ceiling damage? Magnets might hold batting up better than starch...

I would just use a staple gun. I dunno if that would damage the plaster, though. Maybe spray adhesive for the batting, then cover with the fabric and staple near the wall seam?

Another idea...

Maybe attach fabric with velcro? If you wanted to get ultra-fancy, you could even have interchangable options, depending on your mood!

I've heard of fabric on walls like this before, but does anyone know anything about paper on walls? That is paper that is not wall paper. I wanted to put up some Japanese paper in a band across my dining room in my rental apt.
Know anything? Any ideas?
