This is the companion thread to how to clean an oven, I suppose.

Moving into my boyfriends house has taught me so many things. Things such as, he has never cleaned the microwave since he got it, several years ago. I've scrubbed and scrubbed with cleaner, but there's some stuff on there that seems determined not to come off.

Any tips?

There's this new product made for cleaning microwaves that actually worked pretty well. It's a little packet that you put in the microwave (almost like microwave popcorn) and cook it. It explodes, and then the vapors leak out and loosen all the gunk.

I can't for the life of me remember who makes this. I have some at home, and I will check for you, though!

I learned this from a boy roommate: Squirt some lemon juice into a bowl. fill the bowl halfway with water. place bowl in microwave and zap for a minute or two, so the water gets really steamy. Then remove bowl and wipe down the microwave. This works to remove just about everything I've ever gotten stuck in my zapper.

I've tried the lemon juice and water trick, and it's super -- it even worked when I gave an apres cocktail demonstration of what an egg will do in the microwave.

Don't use dish soap in the water, however. It'll only foam everywhere and make a pain of itself to clean up.

I think easy off makes that microwave cleaner stuff. I dont think its necessary to spend the money on something like that though. When I used to clean the microwave at my old job I would just use a cup of plain water - I wouldnt even bother with the lemon juice. The steam loosens all the stuck on gunk so you can wipe it off easier - same thing those fancy products do. For my microwave at home, which makes people wonder if I even use the thing because its so darn clean, I cover things that I know will splatter - usually with just a paper towel - and anything that does manage to land on the walls I wipe up immediately. It keeps me from having a huge chore on my hands.

I did the water trick with baking soda added...worked great. In fact, I think I learned that trick here...

Yup, I was just about to say baking soda in the water. I'm sure I've posted it before, so you must have learned it from me, gia.

All those things will work (and not kill the environment)
I'm sure water & vinegar will work as well. Lemonjuice, baking soda and vinegar are my home helpers.

If I'm cooking something steamy anyway I wipe after (cause I know this is the easiest cleaning time)

I use the lemon juice just because it smells good. 'probly doesn't do much in the "ease of cleaning" category, but it's lemony fresh at least.

hey- some people pay big bucks for lemony fresh.

I’d just heard about nuking a small bowl with vinegar & wiping the mess away and they came out with those packets. Can you say needless markup? What a rip off. Because I nuke my sponges every few days, the crud is easy to wipe off.

why do you nuke your sponges? To kill bacteria?

Yep I use 2 sponges, one to clean dishes & one to wipe countertops & stuff, and after washing the dishes & cleaning the counters I microwave them on full power for 5 min. It’s supposed to kill all the bacteria. I read about it when the “wiping your countertops spreads dangerous bacteria” scare was all the rage on TV.
