Oh wow... breana that link to the university bug site was cool. I realized that "earwigs" are what we call "pincher bugs" here in northern cali... obviously because they have those big pinchers in the back. which reminds me of a story... when i was around ten, i found a perfectly preserved pincher bug in the door of my moms entertainment system. it was inbetween the glass door and this removeable metal piece that bent over the edge of the glass. the pincher bug was dead of course, but it looked really cool to me. so i didn't move it. since it was covered by the metal no one else ever noticed it. from time to time i would go and uncover it to look at it. ah- the good ol days of simple entertainment and passtimes IP: Logged |

Blech; "waterbug" corpse is still resting in peace under boy's soccer shoe in his hallway. LOL... yesterday he told me, "I love how you call 'em waterbugs." I guess I'm falling into that local false sense of security that they're not "really" roaches. IP: Logged |

Two things: 1) 2) To Lis OH, and one last thing. Mosquitos are EVIL. I had my first bite of the season the other day, despite my best efforts to keep the little buggers out of my apartment... IP: Logged |

breana Housemate |
Good GAWD, your first bite of the season? I could only be so lucky. I'm covered in mosquito bites, including one that is in the center of my forehead. It looks like a bindi. I also have chigger bites on my left forearm, and a bee sting on my neck. I won't even go into wear I found a tick this morning. The screen fell out of my bedroom window, and it's open season on sleeping peoples. IP: Logged |

Heh, see, I can handle spiders. Especially the big, slow, harmless ones that are just lazy and hang out in corners. The little ones that scamper really quickly kind of freak me out, but only because they startle me. I've never seen a cockroach in person, but I can betcha anything I'd freak out if I ever did. ok, I know I sound like a whimp when it comes to the mosquitos, but if you were to see what these Philly buggers do to me, you would be afraid too! I have considered hermetically sealing my apartment to avoid any further encounters, but I am sure those dastardly little guys would find a way in anyway. My only consolation: I seem to be less allergic to New Mexican mosquitos (which seem to be fewer in number anyway--aaahhh, the DRY desert air) and I am about to spend 10 days there visiting my family. I may just never return east!Nevertheless, my deepest sympathies for you in your mosquito battle. In fact, I admire you greatly; I could never do anything that would get me that close to the little buggers everyday! IP: Logged |

I've never seen a cockroach in person...until I moved to New York City. I see one or two every week now and I attack them with poison spray (Raid). Last week, I also spotted two centipedes. I killed one, but then realized that we might be on the same "team" - I hate cockroaches and they eat them. Lately, though, several of the cockroach have turned up dead, possibly killed by my baits, spray and the monthly extermination by the management company. Does anyone think that gnawing on a dead cockroach will harm a centipede? Who knows if they get to the corpse(s) before I do... IP: Logged |
|
breana Housemate |
As far as I know, centipedes are strictly predatory, so they shouldn't be munching on carcasses of any kind. No harm done. In the meantime, I'm in Ohio, and I've already had an altercation with a giant spider. It bit me. We had words. It swims with the fishes. IP: Logged |

My office is infested with roaches. I'm not talking little suckers either. 2-5 inch bad boys. We're seeing them on a daily basis, scurrying across the floor like they own it. And I'm in a high rise. We've had an exterminator in TWICE. Still, they keep coming back. Open toed shoes have become a no-no for me. We have roach motels in spots around the way, but they're not doing anything. Ew. Holy Mother of God, this thread is giving me a mad case of the screaming heebie-jeebies--I am majorly bug-phobic. The only good bug is a dead bug, I fear no chemical killer, killing spiders is only bad luck for the spider, etc. However...I forced myself to read all the posts (except for the really gross anecdotes--I mean, c'mon, I'll never get to sleep otherwise) so I can learn more about keeping creepy critters out of my home. I have some advice of my own, for digsters plagued with pantry pests--it's paranoid and a little extreme, but it works--keep all rices, flours, grains, sugars etc. in the fridge. It's a trick I learned from my mom, who lives in the Deep South--I have yet to meet the bug that can open a refridgerator [and if they exist, I don't want to know]. I live in the much drier and less hot SF Bay Area, so I don't take this to such extremes, but I do store sugar, flour and rice in the fridge. Can't hurt. Now, my question for y'all is: Moths. I've got cedar sachets and blocks and balls out the wazoo, and lavendar too. But still, the moths eat my clothing. Mostly my t-shirts. Especially my t's from the Gap. So, does the Gap just make shoddy stuff, or do I have really freakin' persistant moths? What tricks, tips, tools have y'all used to keep moths at bay? I'll try [just about] anything to keep my wardrobe intact. IP: Logged |

Jezaboy and I just moved into our new apartment, only to discover it's crawling with roaches. UGH UGH UGH. The landlord insisted she'd had an exterminator here, but it did no damn good. When I turned on the kitchen light and they were all over the dog's dish, I flipped. These are not the usual Texas roaches, which are HUGE be only travel in ones or twos; they're small and there are tons of them. We got our own exterminator, and he said they're German cockroaches. His advice was to use boric acid to interrupt their reproductive system, and to use plenty of traps to kill as many as possible, but not to use Raid, etc. They're dying, but they are still not gone. We keep the bathroom and kitchen lights on night, and we're keeping all our food and a few dishes in the fridge, including the dog's dish. I'm so grossed out though...I want to unpack! I want to put my dishes in the cabinets, I want to cook dinner, I want to be able to open a drawer in the bathroom w/o causing three bugs to scatter like ...well...bugs. We can't unpack, b/c of the roaches, but we also know they love boxes and tape we don't want those boxes in our living room anymore. I know roaches are part of life in TX, but I never thought I'd see the day I missed the giant tree roaches! IP: Logged |

Yuck, yuck, yuck! I have a deep hatred for cockroaches (who doesn't) Jezabel, if you're in a block, all your neighbours should treat for cockroaches too, otherwise they will keep coming back. My ex was able to keep a cockroach infestation at bay by leaving all lights on all the time, sealing all cracks in the floor, around windows, etc... and keeping the bathtub and sink shut so they wouldn't crawl from the pipes. The #$*& pigeon mites have taken up residence in the microwave! J has seen translucent ones crawling around on it and they all come running out whenever you bump it. And they also seem to be living inside the shower wall, as well. I'm making a list of all this crap, to show the landlady so she'll be forced to call an exterminator. We were going to deal with it on our own, but I think this is beyond that now. Thank goodness it's J's apt. and not mine - I couldn't stand to be there, knowing that there were bugs crawling all over the dishes. I rinse everything off before I use it now. Sooooo gross! quote: Right there with you, girl. We eat a lot of beans and rice and grains, and we keep it all in the freezer. I have airtight canisters that I keep small amounts in on the counter or in the pantry, but the bulk of it stays in the freezer where little insects can't survive. By the way, sometimes bugs lay eggs in grains in the field where it grows, and sometimes it happens in the grocery store, so there's really not much you can do about it, except freeze everything for a day or two when you get it and forget about the fact that you may be munching on little freeze-dried insect eggs. And now for my half-anecdote, half-advice: in roach-infested apartments, store your Tupperware closed! Maybe it won't work based on space constraints, but I will always always keep my Tupperware stored intact (as opposed to lids here, containers there) after finding little dead roaches inside one day when I was packing lunch. UGH. As far as I know, that's the worst thing about roaches-- that they spread diseases-- so you definitely don't want them touching your eating surfaces. Edited to add: A note to the moderators-- Can we rename this thread "Ask Breana" ?? [This message has been edited by Sonya (edited 08-02-2004).] IP: Logged |

An update on the cockroaches: the boric acid /trap approach seems to be working. I only see about one or two roaches a day now, which is gross, but a vast improvement. They're definitely dying. We wrapped all the food in our cabinets in ziplock bags and are being especially cautious about leaving any traces of food out. There's only so much I can do, I guess, but at least I feel like I can live here now. IP: Logged |

Goddamn ants in the kitchen... Grr. IP: Logged |

I think I managed to get rid of the ant problem (of course, I say this & will go home to find they've just returned from vacation...). I was digging up a spot for the rose bush a few weeks back and found TONS of ants. I mean tons. The hole was swarming with the buggers. So I grabbed the "spray your house" bug killer and basically poured it in the hole. I was really worried about the rose bush afterwards - but was more concerned with getting rid of the ants. I haven't had an ant in the house since! (knock on wood!) IP: Logged |

We had ants in the kitchen earlier this year. Man, it just drove me crazy. We got rid of them in one try. We first set up ant traps in the kitchen, we then sprinkled the evil ant poision outside the entire house. We followed that with spraying the perimeter of the house with R@id the following day. I also wiped down all the counters, cabinets and floors with vinegar because I hear they don't like it. They haven't been back since. IP: Logged |

Breana are you around? I have to admit to having not read all of the above thread - desperate for a detailed and comprehensive hand with weevils! We have had a lot of house renovation done this summer and so all our rooms are empty or full of packing boxes (loft included) and we are exhausted and feeling it will never end. The long and short of it is from necessity we have often eaten upstairs and have rarely checked the pantry so I need a few facts having found weevils all over the pantry a week ago. Ok they were from a box of red rice I think but I am unclear if they are rice weevil or grain. We have not seen them fly, but they seem attracted to the window. They appear brown/black. We have thrown all but cans and jars out but still keep on finding them (the garbage has been removed). Is it true they can eat books and boxes? How on earth do I get rid of them if this is true as there are boxes everywhere including a jam-packed loft? Should I spray anything? What? Could they be living in the cavity walls? Like I have nothing else to do!! My little boy had sickness etc the next day -could this be why? He still seems pale and is going to the toilet frequently. Help! IP: Logged |

Eeekkk! My new place has a roach motel applied under the sink I'm hoping it's just a precaution and not a sign of things to come.No sign of anything yet; and the apt. was probably empty a month before I moved in so surely would've seen something by now if they were a problem, right?? I asked the property manager and she assured me there weren't any (which proved true of my last apt., different location but through the same company) but I'm nervous. As I was moving out this weekend one of the neighbors was saying the lack of "waterbugs" was exactly why he liked the building I was moving out of, since it can be a rampant problem in some areas of the city. I wouldn't be too stressed about the little roach motel...some people [myself included] are paranoid enough to put them out just in case. I've never seen a roach [plenty of other yuckies though] but I've got "motels" under my kitchen sink, behind the fridge, etc. just in case...I like to be on the defensive. IP: Logged |

okay, I just squeeled like a little girl complete with EEEK and pulling my feet up off the floor as this strange looking bug scurried across the floor. And even creepier it looked like a running dust bunny so by the time I had composed myself to uh...give it a swifty entry to its next life...it was gone under my steam iron. I picked up the steam iron (still with no feet on the floor) and it scurried under my lap top (which is on the floor and is NOT the one I am currently typing on), but when I moved the computer it was not there, so now I'm freaked out because I don't know where it is and I don't want to put my feet on the floor. I'm sure its harmless but eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww.

I saw something like that in the kitchen last week. I was in my bare feet, so I couldn't even stomp on it, as is my wont. So I spent a good five minutes chasing the damn bug around the kitchen, trying to smush it with the leg of a stool. I got it, all the while feeling like I was on Americas Funniest home videos! Thank you, thank you, thank you, "buggers" thread for finally getting me off my ass to clean my damn kitchen! After the shivers and the heebie jeebies subsided I got rid of all the crap and somewhat open containers of shelved goods that've been in there for AWHILE. Now a bug question: I've got these little guys in my bedroom: don't often see live ones, but I find their little disgusting "shells" every so often. Seem to find them on paper, or on fabric of some kind, they kind of look like the same size and shape as rice, but are dark brown, with little legs, and hair-type stuff on them. They must shed their skin cuz that's what I usually find, and they disgust the HELL out of me. They somewhat resemble sowbugs, but don't seem to be as big, and with less "armadillo"-like bodies. What are these disgusting things, why are they here, and how do I get rid of them. I live in Northwestern Ontario, and it seems like I've had them in every home/apt. I've ever lived in, especially in basements, but also in my now third-story apt. HELP!! I HATE these ugly critters!! When you find a live one, they curl up in a ball (then I SQUISH 'EM - mwahahahaha!) IP: Logged |

Silverfish are similar but I think they have fewer legs (just a couple in the front and in back) Either way, they're both scary as all get out. IP: Logged |
