OK i too want to be clean & i'm a chronicly messy but hate it. Since i found digs about a week ago, i've laughed at myself till i've cried more than i guess i ever have. I have the 'p' method. whenever the mess gets too overwhelming, i tend to avoid it... by any virtual reality available, books pc tv nothing gets my attention except basics of food drink & you guessed it the need to P. Well, it's offically a rule as of last weekend, at my house now, when you go pee, pick up 2 things you aren't using and put them up (lol my lil girl has to doit too!) then on the way back you have to find 2 more to put away. So far it seems to be making a BIG difference. For the first time in forever, Monday morning came & i could walk through the living room without amillion toys and dirty socks underfoot, i could set my coffeecup on the desk without moving R's leftover wrappers, and I only have half the guilt about being here....and ya know it didn't hurt a bit! Now, if we can just keep it up, maybe the 'rule' part will help it stick.

quote: LOL, I was just reading this thread and this reminded me of when i was in college and we used to all put on sports socks and spray Pledge on the floor and "skate," usually resulting in a very shiny floor, and one or more of us falling on our bums. nottooriginal, that is a GREAT story! I'll have to remember that one! [This message has been edited by pollyhyper (edited 01-13-2004).] IP: Logged |

You have to have a bad experience. To keep yourself clean. My mom never told us to clean for years. She just kept trash bags in the closet. One day she told us to go thur them. Guess what we found?!!! Newborn mice.!!!! In the older bags there skeletons of older ones. Believe me I get rid of my bags and I put moth ball in my boxes of things. I don't want to make a home for them either. I hate eating in the dark because we also had lots of roaches, I feel like if I'm about to eat one. Another bad experience. Our house got broken into. The police came to take pictures imagine the embarassement:| I felt everytime they pass by they would say that house if filthy. IP: Logged |

lol! I posted in another thread about how mortified I was that my bf's mother joked to his brother about how messy our place is. Since then I've been A LOT more proactive in tidying up. Which is amusing because my own mother has nagged me my entire life about my chronic messiness and it's never made an impact. IP: Logged |

I'm reading this thread for procrastination (why oh why won't my kitchen pack itself??) and for inspiration for my new house. Bedroom is much smaller and I won't have a study so I have to be neater and tidier... IP: Logged |

Eckerslie- I hope that packing and moving is good for your organization... I have found that for us, it was partly good and partly bad. In all the packing, we were pretty ruthless about things that went. We were only in our last apartment for one year, and there were still some boxes in the basement from moving in. Those went, no questions asked-- if we hadn't used it in the past year, we didn't need it. Have yourself a big old yard sale. If you are moving soon you may have the weather disadvantage working against you, but if all else fails, take it off to your favorite thrift store and get a tax write off. When you unpack, be equally as ruthless. Consider that you will likely be getting housewarming presents to replace old outdated things. If you don't receive housewarming presents, you will probably find yourself buying a lot of things, since you only want new lovely things to go in your new lovely house. We had this ugly blue platter that the boy finally tossed the other day. Yeah it's nice to have a platter, but he said he'd rather have no platter than one so ugly. So now we have no platter! C'est la vie-- I'm sure one will pop up on our wedding registry some day. The not-so-good aspect for us was (and still is!) the finding a place for everything. Luckily, we moved from a one-bedroom apt to a giant four bedroom house, so everything is not as cramped, but now everything is very spread out. We still haven't found places for everything, which means that it's difficult to put everything away. Some things are just difficult in nature to find a place for-- like headbands, or gloves, aprons, etc. Be creative, go find esoteric things from Cont@iner store, but you must find a place for it or it will clutter up your house. One of the most difficult aspects of living in a big house for me is convincing the boy that he needs to help. It was entirely possible for me to clean the apartment by myself, but I CANNOT and will not clean this entire house alone. Especially not while working two jobs and writing my master's thesis. We started doing chores together, and I gradually let him take them over so he is doing some chores by himself. It sounds like hand-holding, I know, but the dude NEEDS it. He would always say things like, "I didn't know how you wanted this done," or "Is it time to clean the XXX-room? I hadn't even noticed." Now he notices when the bathroon is dirty-- HALLELUJAH! And guess what? He finally cleaned off his desk last night (I've been asking for over a year). All it took was a new piece of furniture--this sliding cart underneath the desk to hold the scanner, printer, and 8 million games. The only things on the desk right now are keyboard, mouse, speakers, headphones, and a picture of me. I am so happy. Today we clean the rest of his office! IP: Logged |

Well we're off to Ike@ today to get a set of drawers for the bathroom, new bath curtains, something for my computer stuff, a shoe rack and some containers. I know what you mean about things needing a place . I'm being ruthless about chucking things out as well.
