office space
diary of a home office makeover: part 2
| 1 2 3
continued from page 2

By lunchtime we had just gotten to the point of beginning the grouting process. There’s something rather soothing about grouting, actually: after mixing up the grout powder in a plastic tub, you sort of squash the grout paste in between the tiles using the rubber float, then smooth over the tile with a damp sponge to clean up the excess. Squash and smooth, squash and smooth – get into a good rhythm and you feel like Daniel-san waxing Mr. Miyagi’s car in The Karate Kid. Trust me, it's all very zen, and a welcome change from the more back-breakingly tiresome task of setting tile.

My poor brother arrived late that afternoon to find the entire contents of the office stacked in precarious towers scattered about the living room (this, of course, was where he would also be sleeping). The house was a pit, the air smelled like cement, and after settling my brother into a cleared-out little nook in the living room, with some DVDs and a remote control to occupy him, we apologized profusely for our terrible hosting and finished grouting as quickly as we could.

After another night’s wait and several coats of hi-gloss finish – brushed on slowly and painstakingly with a brush to ensure the ideal thin even coats specified on the package -- we finally finished the job. And found ourselves feeling mighty proud of our newly acquired tiling skills, as we offered ourselves many hearty congratulations on our lovely new office floor.
.
Alas, there was still the matter of moving our mountains of junk back into the beautiful pristine space. With books, files, papers and more scattered willy nilly all over the place, we had some serious organizing to do. Which, of course, provided the perfect (and very necessary) incentive to rethink storage ...  . Coming soon ... in lounge, follow the third installment of Office Space as we come up with some much-needed storage solutions!
