Last
time in
part one of Office
Space: Diary of a Home Office Makeover, we made the first steps
towards improving our eyesore of a second bedroom turned home office, by
rethinking the floorplan and doing a little sensible furniture
rearrangement. The diary continues ...
As long as we were going to be shuffling everything around, we
decided now would be the perfect time to replace the hideous
commercial-style nubbly carpeting with the same pretty red Mexican tile
that ran through the rest of the house.

the original office
space: ugly, disorganized, and with a dirty, matted,
office-building-blah carpet
|
We’d never tiled before but
had read up on the how-tos, and the process seemed easy enough,
especially for such a small area. We figured it would take two days,
tops, so we’d start the following Friday night (yes, it’s a sad sad
thing indeed when you decide to ring in the weekend by tiling your floor
rather than hitting the clubs, checking out a fab restaurant, even
catching a movie. Even scarier is when you realize you're really, truly
looking forward to these oh-so-exciting plans for your Friday evening).
The timing would work out just perfectly, since my baby brother was due
to arrive the Sunday after. We’d have a brand-new beautifully tiled
office floor to show off!
Or… not.
tiling
the floor
Everything
started out fine. We consulted all sorts of references, from our
ancient Time Life home improvement books (snagged at a library
book sale) to websites galore (see sidebar.) We made careful notes
regarding what we’d need for tools and materials; we took
measurements of our room so we’d know how much of an area we
were actually working with. We were organized, confident and ready
for the challenge.
