the lazy decorator's

3. It’s (no-)sew easy: no-sew tape! You don’t need a sewing machine, or even needle and thread, to make tablecloths, curtains, and other crafty sorts of projects. No-sew tape (try Stitch Witchery, available at your friendly neighborhood fabric store) is a miraculous white tape that allows you to bond fabric using just the heat of an iron. The result is both fully flexible as well as washable. Perfect for making hems sans sewing machine, no-sew tape can also be used to add little decorative touches, like ribbon trim, to your decorating projects.

4. Hot stuff: the hot glue gun. Nails, screws, even staples, do a good job of securing flat objects together, but when you don’t want your fastener visible or are working with curves, what’s a lazy decorator to do? In many an instance, the hot glue gun just may be your savior. Works fast, plus leaves way less mess than that bottle of Elmer’s. Make a lampshade new by glue-gunning funky fabric to it; add some texture to those picture frames by adhering marbles, pennies, Super Balls -- whatever little doodads tickle your fancy; turn those cheap-o party favors into magnets. The hot glue gun is the crafty girl/guy’s best friend. But please, do be careful: because it IS, you know, hot. You have been warned.

5. Say it with spraypaint. Paint, in any form, is a great way to give a room a new look for minimal moolah, but paint in spraypaint form makes the work even easier. Because it’s aerosol, spraypaint gives you a nice, smooth finish -- look Ma, no brush marks! – provided you follow the instructions and work in several light even coats, that is (get too impatient with your spraying and the paint will get drippy, which doesn’t make for such a pretty sight). Available in just about every color and finish you could possibly imagine, including metallics, faux-granite, and more, spraypaint’s decorating possibilities are just about endless. Give a faux-brass lamp fixture a more contemporary look by spraypainting it in a stainless steel finish; add a splash of color to your bedroom by spraypainting those end tables cherry red; or liven up some cheap pictures frames with just a few presses of your trigger finger.

6. It’s a tablecloth! It’s a curtain! No, it’s … a bedsheet! The flat bedsheet’s decorating potential extends far beyond its intended purpose as a mattress covering. Use bedsheets for window curtains, shower curtains, pillowcases (it’s so much cheaper to make your own standard-size pillowcases out of a flat sheet than to buy pillowcases ready-made), futon covers, duvet covers, sofa slipcovers, tablecloths … just about any instance where you need big pieces of fabric. Sheets come in a wide array of colors and all sorts of patterns, and can be snagged for cheap at both department store sales and outlet stores.

don't stop, there's more!
