Building up a bar is a continual process, of course, and if you’re anything like me – and pretty much every other twenty-something I know – you can’t afford to just run out to the bottle shop, dump everything you’d like into a shopping basket, and complete your stock in one swift shopping spree. Buying a bottle or two every month or so is a good way to expand your bar without putting to hefty a dent in your wallet. Be sure to find out, too, about any special discount days your local liquor store may offer. My favorite local shop, for instance, has hard liquor specials every Wednesday, where every bottle is 10% off, and with greater savings offered for large quantities. Many liquor stores will even offer a 10% discount on a full mixed case (12 bottles of liquor, not necessarily of the same type) each and every day of the week, and some will give you a discount for a half case too. Twelve bottles may (and probably should) be a bit more than little old you can handle all by your lonesome, but it’s a good deal if you go in on a single case with  friends. Accumulate a few bottles there, a few bottles here, and in no time at all, you'll have enough variety to inspire more cocktail combinations than you could possibly explore in a lifetime.
