pimm's cup
The Pimm's Cup is the quintessential British summer drink. The base of the drink is a concoction called Pimm's No. 1, a gin-based liqueur infused with fruit, herb and spice (ubiquitous in the UK, you might have to hunt a little harder in the States; look for it in better-stocked liquor stores). Sipped on it's own, Pimm's No. 1 tastes vaguely like cough syrup; with the addition of plenty of fresh fruit and a cucumber garnish (don't skip the cucumber!), plus lemon soda or ginger ale, it's transformed into a light, refreshing and amazingly delicious sunny day sipper.

You can make individual Pimm's Cups if you like -- it's basically just 1 part Pimm's to 2 parts lemon soda or ginger ale, plus plenty of garnish goodies. But this makes a great punch for a summer patio party, or a refreshing picnic beverage for a crowd. To make a big batch ahead of time, just combine everything except the soda and cucumber; add the fizzy stuff shortly before serving, and garnish each glass with a cucumber spear.

750 ml bottle of Pimm's No. 1
1.5 L carbonated lemonade (UK-style lemon soda), or lemon-lime soda like 7-up/Sprite; you can also substitute with ginger ale
1 small basket strawberries, quartered
1 lemon, cut into half-wheels
2 limes, cut into half-wheels
3 big sprigs of fresh mint
½ cucumber (preferably the long English kind), cut into spears for garnish

yields 8-10 servings

Combine the Pimm's with the cut up strawberries, lemon, and lime, along with the mint. Give it a stir. Gently stir in the lemonade (7-up/Sprite/ginger ale, whatever). Pour into glasses (tall skinny Collins glasses are the usual, although use whatever you happen to have handy) that have been filled with ice. Garnish with a cucumber spear and enjoy.
